The diseases didn't prevent me from practicing Martial Arts the Martial Arts kept the diseases in check. Although I am not the epitome of health, I still have diabetes and bad knees; it has forced me to learn more hand techniques and pressure points, I have crossed trained in several MA and believe if I had quit I be dead. So my advice is to modify your training until you get healthy. Qi Gong would be an excellent start. My Dr was shocked to find my blood sugar was 575. Well he called me and told me to go in to see him....He in formed me I had type 2 Diabetes, to make a long story short I went into a diabetic shock my blood sugar wouldnt come down. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital my blood today was 301 and she (My Dr.) recommends I do no exercise until it drops to about 150 or so. I guess my Taekwon-do days are numbered... Im worried because my father had his legs amputated because of theis weird desease. Im sure if I can get it down and regulate it I should be fine; me I just do all my forms, patterns, tuls everyday all 24 of them as long as my blood sugar is that high I guess I'll have to stop for now and let my sons take over the class lol (Im getting old). Not only am I a disabled vet now Im a diabetic.. God Bless all and thanx for allowing me to post as usual Master Manuel K. Don't start feeling sorry for yourself!!! I'm going to tell you right now...Type 2 diabetes ain't SHIT compared to the human will to beat it!!!! My father-in-law beat that crap and so can you. This is NOT juvenile diabetes...Type 2 is completely LIFESTYLE driven. A change in diet, the right medicine, and an increase in exercise will knock that shit into submission. Is it easy? HELL NO!!! But, my wife's old man went from insulin injections, to a daily pill, to NOTHING! And he did it with nothing but his diet. The WORST thing you can do is think about giving up TKD. You're going to need a health and fitness lifestyle more than ever before, and regular TKD practice can be a BIG part of that. Don't give up. This thing is 100% treatable. Yes, you might have to spend the rest of your days monitoring your blood sugar, being careful about your food intake, and taking a daily medication. But...so WHAT!!! You can beat this thing, and you can live a long and healthy life. I know things are tough right now. I understand that 100%. But, I'm telling you right now brother that your best days can still be ahead of you. This is NOT the end...this is just a wake up call that's going to lead to better health and a happier life. I believe in you and I know that you will beat this thing because I've seen it done myself. Take it one day at a time, but get back in there and give it hell man. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Thu, 11 May 2006 10:10:59 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: kwanjyelki Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> Sorry, but that statement set off all my alarms. It's simple. Make the change or perish. Eat how they tell you to and go for walks. It won't be long before you're doing your patterns again. Then, a little while after that, sparring with the big boys again. It's kinda like getting married. You make some lifestyle compromises. You eat what sweety makes for you (a balanced diet). You don't get to hang out with the other guys anymore, (candy bars, donuts and beer) you go for walks with sweety (you exercise) you come home when you say you will (sleep well) then you and sweety (your body) will get along just fine. I have more friends than I can count with Type 2 diabetes (I sit in an office all day eating donuts and candy bars and drinking pop). I know, I'm on the same road. :) They all got shocked when they got it and they all changed their diet, went for walks, lost some weight and now, are just fine. They take 1 pill a day and life is good. They play basketball and football with the guys on the weekend. Most of them are in TKD and just make sure they have eaten a good meal before they work out. If they get weak or shaky, they know to watch for it and take themselves out for a bit. All the instructors know to allow for this, though, it doesn't happen very often anymore. A meeting of eyes with the instructor and they bow out for a bit. They have a seat and some orange juice or half a can of Coca-Cola or something like that to get them back in balance. No problem. Life goes on. After you loose a couple of pounds, change your diet and your exercise regiment, you'll feel healthier. Life may become even better than it was. Healthy, happy and full of sass! Bows and respects. However, during my spar I was kicked in the hand and my thumb dislocated. I have been to a doctor, No chips or joint problems forseen. However, some tissue has torn. Now, I cannot do push-ups and 'jumpies' (if you know what those are) However, I am continueing to train as best I can. As far as I see it Taekwondo, happens to have more kicks then punching at this point in my training and see nothing wrong with continuing training as long as my thumb remains out of the way. I have been icing and elevating and taking good care of it since the weekend.  Now,  I feel alright to continueing training hard for my Black Belt.  Does stopping training depend on where you injury is? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Record your voyage in a travel journal! I don't know about that Master Hilland, when the attacker's wrist is the size of the defender's knee, a straight arm wrist lock doesn't seem real effective. There are things that simply don't hurt. Granted, no one was quickly locking it in and no rapid "locking into place." But I don't think a small framed person like my bride could every cause a lot of pain via the straight arm wrist lock regardless of how good she was at it. Like most brides, when so desired, she can cause excruciating pain one way or another....but that's another story. :) Thomas Gordon Florida --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Thu, 11 May 2006 11:44:51 -0500 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: Bert Edens Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Secret meanings... To bring this into the TKD realm, at least with the Chang Hon pattern set, I give you move # 36 of Yul-Gok. From the official definition: 36. Jump to C forming a left X-stance toward B while executing a high side strike to C with the left back fist. When I learned that move, it was just a backfist. Yeah, when you're a new high green belt (in our school), the jump and landing in an X-stance was the challenge in itself... The backfist was an afterthought... :) But much like your Yin style bagua do instructor example, it can certainly be broken down into several moves. The jump and landing could be landing on someone's foot, perhaps raking the shin on the way down (I'm over 300 pounds... the landing itself would do damage to their foot :)), using the other foot for balance, The reaction hand (right) could be grabbing an outstretched hand that had executed a punch, etc., pulling them to you as you move your hand toward the ending position. Holding them also helps solidify your balance. And finally the backfist, to the temple, bridge of the nose, etc. When I tested for 2nd dan, I used that as an example for a break (but reversed, doing it right-handed). Made perfect sense... But when I was just a high green belt....... it was a wobbly backfist... :) And yes, I agree... Hidden, perhaps, is a better word that secret in most cases... Not intentionally hidden... As someone else said, your understanding of the technique deepens with time... This is just a single example, of course... **bows** - Bert Edens, II Dan TKD Springdale, Arkansas --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Manuel Maldonado" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 11 May 2006 12:31:46 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Diabetes Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I want to thank everyone who emailed me with such kind words and encouragement God Bless every last one of you.
