When the opponent is taken off balance in a proper way, you can bent just about every joint in every desired direction. It is also true the other way around. When the opponent still has his balance, you will need excessive amounts of brute force to be able to twist the joint of somebody who is bigger/stronger than you are. Find a doctor who understands how you feel about martial arts. It can make all the difference in their recommendations. I've had 2 different orthopedists for my 2 knee injuries: the first one completely lost interest when I told him I'd like to avoid surgery (he never mentioned PT; I had to ask for a referral); the second was very helpful and encouraging and very much into rehab. 2. TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET. I am studying wound care right now and believe me, diabetic foot ulcers are not pretty. Managing your blood sugar is of course the big thing; but be aware of the possibility that diabetes can cause nerve damage in the extremities, and you can develop a foot injury and NOT FEEL IT. Bottom line: check your feet daily. If you develop a red spot that does not turn pale when you press on it, call your doctor. This can make the difference between an uncomplicated 2-week recovery and, I tell you no lie, a $40,000 hospital stay. Best of luck. As several others have said, this is a manageable condition (with hard work, but what's hard work to a martial artist?). By the way, my niece has type II diabetes and will test soon for shodan in aikido. --Lila Ralston, Live Oak Martial Arts --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "rwood" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 12 May 2006 07:52:33 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] aerobic/strength workout Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. Tomlinson, You could try the Department of Defense website. All the services have a fitness program that is not restricted for release. If there is a National Guard/Reserve Center near you could probably just walk in and tell them you’re looking for an outline for an aerobic/strength workout. Hey, could even offer a demo/seminar and maybe attract more students. IHS, Rob He who ignores disciple comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored. A little background - I have been training in Hapkido for a year under Master Hilland and in that time one of the many things I've learned is that despite the common misconception - size doesn't matter. I am 5'8", 270lbs and there is another student our class that is 6'6" and weighs at least as much as I do. I'm not sure how many of you have met Mrs. Hilland but she is shorter than I am and half my size. I have lost track of how many times she has put both of us on our backs with nothing more than joint lock or a wrist out-turn. She tailors her technique to the person shes working with but it always works. In my opinion one of the great things about Hapkido is that size and strength are eliminated from the equation and the quality of your technique is the only remaining variable. Josh Nyberg Red River Hapkido *"Sorry, but that statement set off all my alarms. If done correctly, kwanjyelki (joint manipulation techniques) is not restricted by someone's size or strength. Kwanjyelki is a very important AND practical part of hapkido." I don't know about that Master Hilland, when the attacker's wrist is the size of the defender's knee, a straight arm wrist lock doesn't seem real effective. There are things that simply don't hurt. Granted, no one was quickly locking it in and no rapid "locking into place." But I don't think a small framed person like my bride could every cause a lot of pain via the straight arm wrist lock regardless of how good she was at it. He used to be a power lifter and is still very strong. His wrists are massive, about the size of my biceps. When you get a wrist lock on him properly, he crumples to the floor just like the rest of us. Granted, this is training, not a fight, so he's not drunk or all PCP'd up, so that could be a factor, but then that would also be a factor for a smaller guy too, wouldn't it? I can understand the logic of the concept that wrist locks won't work on big guys, but I've seen lots of examples of them working when they're applied in an appropriate situation. Regards, Howard "Sorry, but that statement set off all my alarms. If done correctly, kwanjyelki (joint manipulation techniques) is not restricted by someone's size or strength.
