On paper, I just don't see how he can win more than 1 time out of 10. Royce's reputation in the UFC is built around winning 8 and 16 man tournaments, and yes he fought some very big guys. You also have to remember that he fought some paper weights. I mean, Art Jimmerson and Ron Van Clief? C'mon!!! Royce was dominant because this was before anyone knew anything about submission fighting. Most stand-up fighters and wrestlers had never even SEEN the guard before. Well, this is a whole new world now and the champions of today are just too well-rounded. Matt Hughes is a freak of nature. Incredibly strong, competitive to a fault, world class wrestler, excellent striker, mentally tough, highly conditioned, sick submissions, ground-and-pound from hell, walks on water, talks with animals, blah blah blah. Any of the last 5 guys that Matt Hughes has beat the hell out of could have walked through those early UFC's like a hot knife through butter. I don't see Royce taking Matt down (he MIGHT have a chance at pulling guard). I don't see him getting top position on Matt. I don't see him beating Matt on the feet (he's going to get SLAMMED HARD if he tries). Royce's chance is to play a slick guard game and catch him in a submission. He just doesn't have time to cook Hughes in the guard because Matt will be racking up points with strong punching. If Royce doesn't slick him with a submission then this is likely going to be a TKO for Matt or else a lop-sided points victory. Matt has had trouble getting caught in the rear naked choke (Trigg and Penn), and this is likely Royce's key to victory. Either catch him from the guard, or force the scrambles and try to catch his neck during the transition. I just don't see him winning any other way. Hughes is too strong, too fast, too mean, and too technical. Royce is great and one of my favorite martial artists, but this is just too much for him. Having said all of that...I'll be rooting for Royce!!! Zhoo-zheet-su!!! Zhoo-zheet-su!!! What is wrong with a Young person carrying a knife? Most of my friends and I were carrying pocket knives daily from about the age of 8 or 10 onwards. And only a few of us ever did hard time... (I'm kidding!!! :)” Hi Ray, if you check my original post I stated “when I posted the original message it was in context to young people in the UK increasing carrying knifes with no legitimate use in mind.” UK Statistics show that in London alone, there were 12,589 knife-related incidents last year. Young people aged 15-18 made up the bulk of the offenders and victims in the capital. When I was a kid I used to go fishing (carried a knife) I worked on a farm (carried a knife) etc etc so personally I have no axe to grind on this. However I can think of very few legitimate reasons why some urban dwelling kid reared on MTV and computer games needs to carry even a pocket knife. Mind I hear the rats in London are excellent specimens Probably a cultural thing, when I was growing up, pulling a knife or any weapon in a school yard fight or a scrap (tribal wars in Northern Ireland) was the quickest way to lose the respect of your peers, I suspect the opposite applies now. I am sure quite a number of DD members have teenage children, do you teach them self defense against knife attacks ? However I can think of > very few legitimate reasons why some urban dwelling kid reared on MTV and > computer games needs to carry even a pocket knife. As a tool. I carry a simple single bladed pocket knife, not a multi-tool. Yet I use that knife at least a half-dozen times each day to cut, to pry, to open, to reach, to screw... yes, lots of things that I should probably not be using a good knife to do. But there are a multitude of good reasons for a person of (almost) any age to carry a knife, male or female. The ways I use my knife daily probably differ little from the ways my grandfathers used theirs. > I am sure quite a number of DD members have teenage children, do you teach > them self defense against knife attacks ? FWIW, I have taught RKD (Reactive Knife Defense) to kids as young as 10 or 11. Most of the sexual crimes were allegedly against teenage girls. On Friday, Oulu district attorney Paivi Markus said Sami Greus, who taught taekwondo mainly to girls and women, was charged with multiple cases of sexually abusing minors, rape and attempted rape from 1997 to 2005. Greus has been in police custody since January. "This is an unusual case in Finnish legal history," said Markus. "The case is very large." Markus said the 12 victims were aged 16 and 17 at the time of the alleged crimes. Greus is a well-known taekwondo trainer in Finland. He has denied all the charges. If found guilty, he faces a maximum six-year prison sentence. The case was expected to open in Oulu District Court, 600km north of Helsinki, in June. Markus said the trial would probably be held behind closed doors to protect the identities of the girls and women involved. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
