I can say that while I am only a 6th Dan and have not trained as long as some of the senior masters here, no one knows everything about any art. Once you think you do, you should hold your breath until you die because you can no longer grow and learn. The antithesis of growth and learning is death and decay. And that lesson does come from an ancient discipline...Taoism. The previous part was taught to me by a Shaolin Sifu (Shandong Black Tiger specifically) but used in the context of a Shaolin saying stemming from the Boxer Rebellion. My point is, since I am digressing a bit, is that the journey is less about how much you know than it is about walking the path. Once you think you know everything there is to know, its time to sit down because you are no longer on the path. Since our founding thirty three years ago, we have witnessed the global expansion of members affiliated to the WTF; from the original 19 member nations in 1973, we now have 181 member national associations. From the two regional unions of Asia and Europe in 1973, we now have three more regional partners in Africa, Asia and Oceania. >From its roots as a Korean martial art of self-defense, we have now evolved into a sport in the Programme of the Olympic Games. Such is our popularity and renaissance that taekwondo and the WTF are now primed to contribute in the further development of the sport and the global propagation of the Olympic Movement through the sport. Our enhanced position in the international sports fraternity is credited to the abiding passion and endeavors of our taekwondo grandmasters, who took it upon themselves to expand their horizons and disseminate taekwondo worldwide. Their courage to embrace the unknown is admirable; their devotion to taekwondo inspirational. I thank our founding grandmasters for their sacrifices for taekwondo, as well as for the future generations of practitioners of the sport. Henceforth, it is our responsibilities to ensure the global expansion and acceptance of the sport of taekwondo. In addition, I wish to thank our friends from the International Olympic Committee, the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations, the General Association of International Sports Federations and other international sports federations for their astute guidance and kind support for our sport. During the darkest hours of our reformation, we could count on them to stand by us and lead us by example, just as a beacon would shine the way home for many a lost ship. The contributions of our global media partners and sponsors should not be overlooked, for their support and understanding through the years have been crucial, especially in the development of our solidarity programs. I believe that the people who impact and are impacted by taekwondo are the mainstay of the sport. For this reason, I firmly believe that the passion of and sacrifices made by our athletes, coaches, international referees and officials for the sport have resulted in the worldwide enhancements to the technical standards of taekwondo. Just as importantly, I believe that the relationship is mutual; that the philosophies of taekwondo have enriched their lives, and those of countless more. It is my hope that taekwondo and the WTF will continue to receive your kind support in the years to come. Last, but not least, I wish to thank our executive council members, member national associations and secretariats for accepting and fulfilling their responsibilities over the past thirty three years. The task to develop and propagate taekwondo is never easy, and many a times their efforts have gone unnoticed. Nonetheless, the popularity of taekwondo and the international standing of the WTF are only possible through the devoted members that make up the foundation of the sport and organization. It is for this reason, above all, that I thank each and every one of you. It has been my distinct honor serving taekwondo and the World Taekwondo Federation. He is determined in the octagon, but he is a very nice guy outside the match. I had the opportunity to do some MA training at Militech's gym a while back and met many of his fighters. Most (not all) were very polite and kind to me. I took a judo class at the gym and before class a couple of the guys were asking me about my experience in Hapkido. We started showing techniques back and forth and ended up on the ground. My ground game used to be okay, and I had learned a slick reversal from my Sabumnim. Some of the fighters (not judo players) saw the reversal and had me break it down for them. It was great fun to be working with those guys. Then, on the next UFC fight, I saw it on TV! :) Okay, long story for short comment. Matt is a great fighter and very determined. I think he'll do well against Royce. I just wish we had PPV to see it. :( Julie H. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: joconnor@cybermesa.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] TKD coach faces 800 sex charges Date: Sat, 27 May 2006 08:14:38 -0600 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Helsinki - A district court in central Finland has charged a > 32-year-old Finnish male taekwondo instructor with 799 sexual crimes. > > Most of the sexual crimes were allegedly against teenage girls. .... > If found guilty, he faces a maximum six-year prison sentence. Knowing yourself means knowing what you can do; and since nobody knows what he can do until he tries, the only clue to what man can do is what man has done. THE IDEA OF HISTORY by Collingwood Grand Master Atamian: I’ve been a student of Master Cyrus for over 25 years and I was a witness for the elevation of Master Cyrus to Headmaster, with all of the rights and privileges that came with that elevation. It was my honor to have been present, not so much as to watch my instructor attain a magnificent tribute, but to see the respect that two men had for each other, where race, religion and creed were overlooked and to recognize their individual accomplishments in the martial arts world. Not through hype or phony mumbo jumbo, but through diligent training that they’ve dedicated their lives too. The recent schism that has occurred, can and will, cloud the martial arts scene again. But I’m not a politician nor am I a peacemaker, only a student. Be that as it may, my opinion, will/must account for something. When we have passed from this plane, what will history say of us---did we give truthfully and honestly of ourselves---or did we fall into the den of ingratitude and fright. Who will remember that we passed this way? For over 25 years I’ve observed Master Cyrus’s dedication and diligence to the arts, and never once has he wavered. Constantly searching, training, researching ideas and different arts to pass on to his students. Chinese arts, Korean arts, Japanese arts, and the list goes on and on. Training with different masters, so that his students would be aware of and comfortable with, whatever they might encounter and possibly have an interest in. With that said, I will respectfully give my martial arts allegiance to Headmaster Ian A.Cyrus. It was an honor to have met you. This is a confusing world we live in. At every turn we are forced to make choices about how to live our lives. Ideally, our choices will be made on the values we hold; but frequently we are not clear about our own values. Here are the facts: 1. I succeeded Hyman V. Didia, the 6th successor of Chosondo. He (Didia) succeeded Michael A. Atamian, 5th successor. This was all orchestrated by Atamian. Didia's succession was only a formality. Therefore, in essence, I actually succeeded Atamian. This occurred over 13 years ago. 2. There has never been, at least to my knowledge, a precedent where a succession of this magnitude is revoked. Once someone assumes headmastership of an art it is irrevocable until such time as he/she relinquishes control to a chosen successor or passes. In which case the successor is the heir apparent. 3. In the case of Chosondo and the Chosondo Society, I assume control upon succeeding Atamian. I changed the name of the art from Chosondo to Choson Kwon Bup. I also changed the name of the organizational structure from the Chosondo Society to the International Chosondo Federation (ICF). I redesigned the logo to its current form. In doing so, I copyrighted and trademarked these references to legally protect them against misuse. I completely revamped the curriculum up to the 5th dan based on years of research in a bio-mechanics lab at Temple University were I earned my Masters in Bio-Mechanics. This culminated in an article that appeared in Taekwondo Times (Jan 2003 issue) titled, "The Evolution of Choson Kwon Bup". I recently again changed the name of the organization from the ICF to the International Korean Martial arts Federation (IKMAF) in order to create an atmosphere of inclusiveness given that the Taekwondo and Hapkido member schools out-number the Kwon Bup schools. These organizational structures are legally incorporated entities. Therefore, any references thereonto pertaining should come from me, period. I made these changes because it was and still is my purview to do so. Atamian was supposed to be in complete retirement with respect to all matters involving the art. I kept him informed and considered his input but all final decisions were mine. I dare say that I did not need his approval. The art is mine to do as I saw fit. Those were his words on the day 13 years ago when I formally succeeded him. There were scores of witnesses who can attest to that as well as a video taped record. On a personal note Atamian has assumed his current posture because he does not agree with my decisions and the direction I am moving in. He was happy as long as I was doing things that met with his approval. He sits in judgement of me... I wonder if Lester (Yu Mun) Sun, the art's 4th successor would judge him as harshly as he has me.This recent turn of events is disheartening because I felt that our relationship had transcended the martial arts. I considered him to be family. I am further saddened by the fact that he felt he had to air our problems out in this manner. Therefore, I respectfully and humbly ask him to stand down. The art is now mine and that is the way it will stay. I will do what I must to protect it. Finally, I apologize profusely to Master Terry and the members of the Dojang Digest for using up band width space on this forum and for Atamian's oversight in airing our dirty laundry in this manner. Thank you for your indulgence in this matter. Ian A. If it is factual and valid it is in there...if it is not in there then it is not! I am the Fifth Successor to Choson Do and Hyman V. Didia is the Sixth. He and I are the only ones alive today who know all that there is to know about this ancient Korean art. Yes, there are several of those who once belonged to our fold and now wish to "substitute" other names and versions of Choson Do but they have been summarily dismissed from The Choson Do Society and the Ancient Art of Choson Do...period. Now, that should explain what is and what isn't and that should end any conversation before it can get started. Fraternally, Michael A. Atamian Hyman V.
