What a totally preposterous story! I'm surprised the Copper in the picture, Inspector Mac McGarry, could keep a straight face. I had to look at the date to make sure it wasn't April 1st or something. I was especially amazed by the spokesman for Gloucester Police's comments, including: "We are very glad it is off the streets..." like the damn thing ever was 'on the streets'! It's not the kind of thing you could slip in your back pocket! Unless you're going to tell me that they also arrested the Klingon who was carrying it at the time? This whole idea of yet another 'amnesty' is that the criminals, or those with criminal intent, won't be coming forward to hand their blades in any case. And imposing further restrictions, or bans, on knives isn't the answer either. The handgun ban brought in after Dunblane and Hungerford did nothing to take illegal guns off our streets. The only people affected were law-abiding sporting shooters. There are now far more guns out there, and far more gun-related crime, since the handgun ban and other restrictions were introduced. It isn't the knives that are the problem, it's the mentality of the people behind them. The sort of people who'll hit someone with whatever they can lay their hands on. The so-called knife amnesty is simply another political stunt, carried out to make it look like they (the politicians and Police) are doing something about knife-related crime. If you lay a knife on the ground, it is incapable of jumping up and slashing or stabbing someone... in the same way that a house-brick can't club the brains out of someone all on its own. A knife is a tool, pure and simple. Boy Scouts used to be allowed to carry them. The Butcher cuts his meat, and the Farmer and Gardener use their knives for a wide range of tasks as do many other people. Yes, I'm sure that the Klingon weapon could probably 'take someone's head off', in the same way that an axe, hedging bill, or some other such tool, could also inflict similar damage assuming that someone is crazy or evil enough to do it. I wonder what sort of ban the politicians can think of, and what sort of amnesty the Police can think of, that would have prevented a 23-year-old man from raping and murdering that 89-year-old woman recently? Perhaps we should try out that Klingon weapon on him! Today, many children are spending large amounts of time with televisions, computers and computer games and are developing lifestyles that pre-empt regular exercise from an early age. The modern world is highly stressful; this factor decreases the ability to learn, to be creative and to reach our full potential as human beings. Also, ‘Stress’ is the root cause of many of the learning problems found in people or children labelled hyperactive, ADD, ADHD and emotionally handicapped. CHOI KWANG-DO & LEARNING DISABILITIES – THE BENEFITS OF JOINING A CHOI KWANG-DO CLASS: Personal Development: Social, Mental, Emotional and Physical No labelling, individual development honoured Development of leadership skills and a winning attitude Taught in a non-competitive, non-contact, safe, fun learning environment Self-discipline and goal setting encouraged Choi Kwang Do can assist your child in a fun unique way that can gently work on almost any developmental issue or problem Optimum Health Class structure supports Vestibular system development: Listening skills and attention span development Specific drills designed to develop hand and eye co-ordination, essential for visual sense stimulation and development Whole brain integrated development program Stress management Self-Defence Confidence building and character development Choi Kwang Do (CKD) is a unique martial art and exercise program that can assist children and individuals with learning disabilities. CKD is a non-contact, non-competitive martial art for individual personal development, health and well-being. At CKD we are very concerned with the health and well-being of the children of today. CKD could be the most complete human development program in the world today. Research at the University of Akron, in Ohio, in the USA, proved that martial arts is an effective treatment to combat ADD. Over a 10 week period researchers studying a small group of clinically hyperactive children found that those who took martial arts lessons learned to control their compulsive behaviour much better than children of the same age who did not receive martial arts training. THE BASIC NEURO-BIOLOGY OF ADD & ADHD The human body has an incredible ability to adapt, but every part of the human body has it’s own necessary development cycle that the modern world may not support too well. Many of the learning problems today, such as ADD/ADHD, etc., research suggests is due to a particular sense (usually the eyes or ears, or both), not connecting up properly to the brain: and being, or remaining underdeveloped. If the ears (the vestibular system) are not sending information to the brain properly the child will compensate by using their eyes to balance, and to sense their place in the world: making it very difficult to have a good attention span and to assimilate information using their eyes. Similarly, if the eyes do not go through their own complete development cycle they may send information to the brain properly either. This is very common with children who spend large amounts of time in front of televisions or computers. Televisions and computer screens display information that is 2 dimensional. We live in a 3 dimensional world and too much time spent in front of computers or video games can cause a child’s eyes to wire up to a 2 dimensional world. This is not conducive to learn in a 3 dimensional world. Also, very little hand to eye co-ordination will be developed which is an essential skill for life. ‘At CKD classes we have specific drills to develop more neural connections in the brain, and the classes are taught with a structure for self-discipline, to support listening skills and to develop attention spans!’ CHOI KWANG-DO & LEARNING DISABILITIES Choi Kwang-Do’s training methods and concepts are totally unique in the fitness industry. CKD's movements work both the left and the right sides of the body and brain evenly (contralateral movement). Every movement has been analysed to make sure it uses biomechanical principles (using the body the way it was designed to move). Choi Kwang Do’s movements are very sophisticated, recent research has recently proved that movement stimulates the production of neurotrophins, natural substances that stimulate the growth of nerve cells and increase the number of neural connections in the brain. Unlike traditional martial arts, that use ipsilateral movements, which are harmful and stressful on the brain. CKD movements are cross-lateral (contralateral) like a baby’s crawl. CKD drills work both sides of the body evenly; hands and feet, left and right side, all this in co-ordination with the eyes. As a result the corpus callosum, (the “nerve” that connects the left and right side of the brain) can become more fully developed. Children (and adults) also need to be able to access both the creative right side of the brain and the logical left side of the brain together to be able to be truly effective in today’s world. A child (or adult) who is more predominantly right brained and creative may lack the self-discipline or rational thought (left brain functioning) to reach his/her potential as a human being. Alternatively a child (or adult) who is more predominantly left brained and logical may lack the ability to intellectually solve problems by thinking creatively, severely limiting their chance of achieving their full potential also. Choi Kwang Do is a unique physical program that works both sides of the body and therefore brain evenly for whole brain integrated development and learning! When we do move in our modern society it tends to be competitive or compulsive increasing the risk of early injuries. In Choi Kwang Do personal development rather than sports competition is paramount. CKD has been designed for optimum health and personal development. We want children at CKD to be champions in life, not the ring. Choi Kwang Do teaches students to reduce the effects of stress. Furthermore CKD training not only includes learning to use more exercise, but particularly integrated movement requiring balance and coordination that assists nervous system development and function. We have specific drills to develop hand to eye co-ordination, attention spans, and essentially your child’s ability to learn. Physical movement from earliest infancy through adulthood plays a vital role in the creation of nerve cell networks that are the very essence of learning. Choi Kwang Do is a highly refined and scientific martial art form distinctively different from all traditional martial arts in concept of movement. It should not be put into the same category with the many of the hundreds of sub-styles of existing martial arts systems. In-fact, Choi Kwang Do is the only modern martial art using scientific principles from the fields of biomechanics, psychology, kinesiology, chiropractic and neurophysiology disciplines. At Choi Kwang Do we welcome children who are labelled as hyperactive, ADD, ADHD or emotionally handicapped. Please contact us if you feel we can help you in any way, we would love to hear from you!
