According to research by the police federation, which represents officers from constables to chief inspectors, seven thousand officers in England and Wales have been threatened with a gun in the past two years, and 40,000 with a knife. Also worth noting in the UK there were 66,000 calls last year inferred that firearms were going to be used and, out of those, there were less than 18 shots fired by police officers. How do we address this threat, Police federation chairman Jan Berry said the number of authorised firearms officers should increase from 5% to up to 8%, and possibly higher in some urban areas. "While police officers do not want to be routinely armed, they do want more firearms officers to be available when needed," says Ms Berry. Arming all the UK's police officers has been repeatedly ruled out by chief police officers and the government, who say it would encourage violence and endanger relations with the public. And a large proportion of rank-and-file officers have always been against the idea. So yes, our officers do face danger, but not to the extent that they all want to be routinely armed Ref “Do the restrictive laws on knives, guns, and the like make you more secure in your person and possessions? Someone in an earlier post said that they feel safer carrying a concealed weapon and while I can relate to that, personally I feel safer living in an environment where the perceived level of danger is such that we do not feel it is necessary to carry a concealed weapon. To each their own! You state "perceived level of danger" - in my experience in the UK the perception is that the US is a dangerous place and the UK is safer. >From the BBC you are more likely to be assaulted in Scotland than in the US - so the perception is not based in reality. The level of violence has increased in the UK from the past even with restrictive laws. I think I would want to know what could be done in the UK to reduce crime levels and the threat of real threat of violence. > Best Regards > Slane Rick Clark "Arguments are extremely vulgar, for everyone in good society holds exactly the same opinion."
