Norris is familiar to fans worldwide as the star of action films such as _Hitman, The (1991/I)_ , The Delta Force (1986) and Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection (1990). He also starred in Missing in Action (1984) and its sequels, Firewalker (1986) and Sidekicks (1992). Norris was born Carlos Ray in Ryan, OK. The eldest of three children, he helped his mother raise his two younger brothers in Torrance, CA, where his family moved when he was 12. Norris joined the Air Force after graduating from high school. During a stint in Korea, he began to study the Asian martial art of Tang Soo Do. After returning home, he worked for Northrop Aviation and moonlighted as a karate instructor. Two years later he was teaching full-time and running a number of martial-arts schools. His students included Steve McQueen, Priscilla Presley and the Osmonds. In 1968 he became the Professional World Middleweight Karate Champion, holding the title undefeated until he retired in 1974. He is a black belt in Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwan Do, both Korean fighting arts, and knows all forms of the martial arts. In 1969 he earned the Triple Crown for the highest number of tournament wins, and was named Fighter of the Year by "Black Belt" magazine. By the time he was 34, Norris had established 32 karate schools and had been a champion for six years. In 1996 he became the first Westerner to be awarded an eighth-degree black belt in Tae Kwan Do. Norris, who was urged to get into acting by his friend McQueen, skillfully incorporates his martial-arts knowledge into his series and feature film projects, stressing action and technique over violence. He is the author of the books "The Secret of Inner Strength" and "The Secret Power Within - Zen Solutions to Real Problems". He works for many charities, including the Funds for Kids, Veterans Administration National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans, the United Way Make-a-Wish Foundation and KickStart, a nonprofit organization he created to help battle drugs and violence in schools. He also starred in the television movie Bound by Honor (1993), broadcast on CBS. He lives on a ranch when not filming. His birthday is March 10. --------------------------------- IMDb mini-biography by DANIEL --------------------------------- Mini biography Chuck Norris's fight career lasted from 1965-1970. Norris started off by losing his first three tournaments, but by 1966 he was almost unbeatable. Among the numerous titles he won were The National Karate Championships (1966), All-Star Championships (1966), World Middleweight Karate Championship (1967), All-American Karate Championship (1967), Internationals (1968), World Professional Middleweight Karate Championship (defeating Louis Delgado on 24 November 1968), All-American Championship (1968), National Tournament of Champions (1968), American Tang Soo Championship, and the North American Karate Championship. Norris compiled a fight record of 65-5 with wins over champions Joe Lewis, Skipper Mullins, Arnold Urquidez, Ron Marchini, Victor Moore, Louis Delgado, and Steve Sanders. Of the five men to beat Norris, three were Allen Steen, Joe Lewis, and Norris's last career defeat to Louis Delgado in 1968. Norris retired as undefeated Professional Full-Contact Middleweight Champion on January 17, 1970, he was 30 years old. --------------------------------- IMDb mini-biography by angelsunchained --------------------------------- Spouse Gena O Kelley' (28 November 1998 - present) 2 children Diane Holechek (December 1958 - 1988) (divorced) 3 children --------------------------------- Trade mark Usually plays heroes who are good guys to the bone, and despite having harmful martial arts skills, would always rather find a better solution than fighting. --------------------------------- Trivia Campaigned for George Bush in the 1988 US presidential election. Eldest of three sons born to Ray and Wilma Norris. Chuck's brothers are Wieland Norris (born July 12, 1943; KIA in Vietnam, 1970) and Aaron Norris. Aaron is the youngest of the trio, the proverbial "runt of the litter." Father of Mike Norris and Eric Norris, the latter of whom is a professional stock car driver. Chuck also has a daughter named Dina, born in 1964. Diane Holechek is the mother of Chuck's aforementioned kids; of those three, Dina is the only one not mentioned in Chuck's 1980's autobiography, "The Secret Of Inner Strength: My Story." More recently, Chuck and Gena O'Kelly (his second wife) welcomed opposite-sex twins Dakota Alan (the boy) and Danilee Kelly (the girl). The twins' birthday is August 30, 2001. Often trained with Bruce Lee. 6-time World Karate Champion; among those he faced for this title are fellow actors Joe Lewis and Steve Sanders. He was the karate teacher of father-son actors Steve McQueen and Chad McQueen. The elder McQueen encouraged Norris to pursue a career in movies and television; allegedly, he told Chuck: "If you can't do anything else, there's always acting." Received "Veteran of the Year 2001" honor at the 6th Annual 'American Veteran Awards'. (12 December 2001) In the movies where he's a police officer, Norris usually prefers to work alone (i.e. Lone Wolf McQuade (1983), Code of Silence (1985) and Top Dog (1995)). Has 3 grandchildren by son Eric Norris; these include fellow actress Gabby Di Ciolli. He has founded two of his own martial arts: Chun Kuk Do ("the Universal Way") and American Tang Soo Do. He is the Founder of the National Tang-Soo-Do Congress (NTC) and the United Fighting Arts Federation (UFAF). Chuck is also President of the latter. Founder of National Tang Soo Do Congress (NTC). He has a 10th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, and also an 8th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do...that is, the Korean (or traditional) styles of each. His father Ray was killed in a car accident, shortly after cancer surgery. Part of Ray's throat and chin were removed; a tube was inserted in his trachea to help him breathe. Ray was thrown out of his car in the wreck, and the tube came out. Ray suffocated on the ground because no one at the accident site was aware of the tube. His voice and drama coach was Jonathan Harris, of "Lost in Space" (1965) fame. Harris "taught him how to speak," by putting his fingers in Norris's mouth, and stretching the mouth wide open. Chuck names Jonathan as the only man in the world who could get away with doing that to him...which Harris was always proud of. Having worked for years as a martial-arts instructor (giving both public and private lessons), he was offered the role of "Sensei Jon Kreese" in the original The Karate Kid (1984). He turned it down, claiming he did not want his name connected with such a brutal and vicious character. Despite their vast political differences, he is friends with actress and comedienne Whoopi Goldberg. He was so impressed with a performance of hers that he tried, unsuccessfully, to get her a role in his film Invasion U.S.A. (1985). Reader's Digest once noted a story of how Norris, true to his characters, prefers to find a non-violent way to solve a situation. Norris was in a bar once when a customer walked in and said to him, "You're in my seat. Move." Norris complied, and as the customer sat down, he recognized Norris. He then said, "Chuck, you could've kicked my butt if you wanted to. Instead of moving, why didn't you just attack me?" Norris' response: "What would that have accomplished?" Norris later said the experience resulted in him getting a new admirer and a new friend. He has 5 children, 3 from first wife Dianne Holechek; Mike (b. 1962), Dina (b. 1964), and Eric (b. 1965) and 2 from second wife Gina O'Kelley; twins Dakota Alan and Danilee Kelly (b. 2001). Is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under the Machado Brothers. As a child, his idol and favorite actor was John Wayne. Indeed, their on screen personas bear much in common. Both achieved their highest level of fame playing no nonsense good guys who were incorruptible and did whatever it took to make sure that justice was served and that the bad guys got what they deserved. He is a staunch supporter of the Republican Party. Is an NRA member. Is a close friend of legendary writer and director John Milius. Enjoys playing golf and participates in many celebrity golfing events. A website known as "Chuck Norris Facts" has been created as a parody of his career. Chuck is not offended by the website, in fact, has said he feels honored to have a website named after him and says he laughs when he reads the facts. Participated on the TV show "The Contender" with fellow action superstar Sylvester Stallone. Was a guest star on "The Price is Right Million Dollar Spectacular" honoring Bob Barker's 80th birthday. Other celebrity guests included Celine Dion, Ray Romano, Charlie Sheen, and Larry King. Was the initial choice for the character of Red Forman on the Fox sitcom "That 70's Show," but was still filming "Walker, Texas Ranger," so he had to turn it down. Actively supported George W. Bush's campaign to become Governor of Texas in 1994. --------------------------------- Salary An Eye for an Eye (1981) $250,000 Good Guys Wear Black (1978) $40,000 Breaker! Breaker! Never having heard this as a recovery/strengthening path, I was wondering if you all had any advice other than the obvious advise of follow the doctor's recommendations." People who get their rehab protocols from "a friend" do a lot to keep physical therapists and orthopedic surgeons in business. Please urge your student to follow his doctor's recommendations about what NOT to do, and his physical therapist's recommendations about what TO do. If he doesn't have a physical therapist, he should. He can ask his doctor for a referral. Correct rehab will make a tremendous difference in the speed of recovery, preservation of normal range of motion, and preventing a recurrence.Incorrect rehab can not only undo the repair, but cause additional damage. --Lila Ralston (student physical therapist assistant) --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2006 17:00:30 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Successful Applicants for Olympic Scholarships Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net WTF Announces List of Successful Applicants for Olympic Scholarships The World Taekwondo Federation has announced the provisional list of successful applicants for the Olympic Scholarships for Athletes "Beijing 2008" offered by the Olympic Solidarity of the International Olympic Committee on June 9, 2006. The list, comprising of 37 aspiring athletes from 24 nations, is a near-conclusion to months of technical evaluations and cooperation between IOC, the National Olympic Committees and WTF. From the first letter dated August 8, 2005, introducing the program to the letter dated May 17, 2006, announcing the list of successful athletes, WTF has in total evaluated 127 applicants. "Olympic Solidarity's decision as to which athletes were finally awarded scholarships was based on a number of criteria which included, amongst other things, the NOC's national priority, (WTF's) technical evaluation and Olympic Solidarity's budgetary considerations," said Mr. James Macleod, section manager (Athletes), in the letter. Thanking the IOC Olympic Solidarity on behalf of the successful applicants, WTF Secretary General Dong-Hoo Moon sent a letter to the presidents of the pertinent member national associations of the successful applicants to make full use of the scholarship opportunity for qualification to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. "The success of our athletes to qualify for the Olympic Games is not only important to the international standing of taekwondo and WTF, but also to future scholarship considerations of the IOC Olympic Solidarity with regard to our sport," said the secretary general in his letter. The Olympic Scholarship for Athletes "Beijing 2008" is an effort by the IOC Olympic Solidarity to offer comprehensive assistance to athletes in their training and attempt to qualify for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing. This year, the IOC Olympic Solidarity received a total of 2,060 applications from 154 NOCs for all sports, out of which 712 Olympic scholarships from 115 NOCs have been awarded. As the IOC Olympic Solidarity is still analyzing potential candidatures from a further 39 NOCs, WTF hopes that there may be additional taekwondo athletes benefiting from the Olympic scholarship. "We, at WTF, wish all successful applicants the very best in their endeavors. We also hope that unsuccessful applicants will not be discouraged; rather, we believe that all athletes will be more motivated than ever to succeed in the training and attempt for qualification to Beijing 2008," said Secretary General Moon. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2006 17:01:52 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Free Taekwondo Training to Poor Kids Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Vigan Gives Free Taekwondo Training to Poor Kids VIGAN CITY, Philippines - Aside from basketball, lawn tennis, soccer, chess, cycling, bowling, skateboarding, the city government under the leadership of Mayor Ferdinand C Medina is giving free training to the city's "underserved, underprivileged" children on Taekwondo in cooperation with the University of Northern Philippines (UNP). Taekwondo, a martial arts discipline which requires parents to buy expensive suit and gears and pay around P300.00 monthly fee and P300.00 lifetime registration fee plus a fee each time the student is promoted to a higher level/belt, was introduced free to the city's poor kids this summer during the first Taekwondo Summer Olympic. Sponsored by the city government of Vigan and the UNP, the program is a result of the fusion of efforts of the Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA), the UNP Taekwondo Chapter and the Ilocos Sur Educators Taekwondo Association (ISETA). Fifty children from the public elementary, secondary and the out-of-school youth of Vigan City were the beneficiaries of this free training that included free lifetime membership fee, among others. They now belong to the Heritage Taekwondo Chapter. According to Julius Edward Apelin, the City Sports Coordinator, the program wants to give the out-of-school youth, the students from the public elementary and secondary the chance to develop themselves morally, spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and to learn the value of sportsmanship by joining sports events. It also promotes closer relationship between players, teachers, coaches, parents, officials and the administration; registers the Heritage Taekwondo Chapter and its new members in the Philippine Taekwondo Association; and the program wants to discover new potential players for future higher level of competitions. On June 10 these new Vigan City Taekwondo jins will join the 2nd Heritage Taekwondo Cup of Vigan City at the Plaza Burgos. In this tournament they will be joined by trainees from other Taekwondo chapters in Ilocos Sur and surrounding provinces. And in the future they will have the chance to join the New Face Taekwondo Championship in Laoag City. City Mayor Ferdinand C Medina, a sports 'enthusiast', has made sports as one of the priority programs of the city government. Because he believes that education is not limited in the classroom, but extends to the sports fields. As sports is one of the great disciplines which help mold productive, healthy, optimistic children who one day will lead the city. And according to Mr Apelin, the Heritage City of Vigan "envisions itself as a pioneer center for sports excellence in the province, and wants to spearhead the conduct of athletic events that benefit its residents." This year Mayor Medina has approved a set of 18 sports events, six of these were held in the first half of the year: the 1st Heritage Taekwondo Cup of Vigan City, Learning the Mechanics of Basketball Officiating and Interpretation of Rules, the 1st Mayor Ferdinand C Medina Summer Basketball League, the Children Lawn Tennis Clinic, Taekwondo Summer Olympic and the Vigan All Star Game. The 2nd Heritage Taekwondo Cup of Vigan City on June 10 starts the second half of the year. It is followed by the Sports Summit in July, the 2nd Binnisekletaan ditoy Ciudad ti Vigan, 3rd Heritage Chess Yournament and the 2nd Mayor Ferdinand C Medina Mini Olympic in August, the 1st Heritage City of Vigan Traditional Games in September, the 1st Vigan City Children Basketball Clinic, the 2nd Mayor Ferdinand C Medina Basketball League and the 2nd Vigan City Soccer Competition (FUTSAL) in October, the 2nd Boxing Competition, the 2nd Inter-Barangay Duckpin Bowling Tournament and the 3rd Heritage Street Skateboarding Competition in November. --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2006 21:26:50 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Vietnam will host the first ever World Youth TKD Chip Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Young martial artists to fight in City 10:17' 12/06/2006 (GMT+7) Vietnam will host the first ever World Youth Taekwondo Championship set to take place in HCM City next month, said head of the National Sports and Physical Training Committee's teakwondo section Vu Xuan Thanh. Thanh added that Vietnam won the bid to host the event in the meeting of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) in France. The event will see nearly 2,000 competitors under the age 17 from 85 countries and territories compete in the men's and women's 20 weight categories. Vietnam's team will select the best of 20 youngsters from centres in Hanoi, HCM City and Da Nang, who are national champions and have sustained top form, for a one-month training session in South Korea before the tournament on July 26-30. The tournament will be very tough for Vietnamese artists because they have to win eight or nine matches in a row for the final. "With the participation of many competitors at the World Cup, each weight category will see 45 contenders fighting in knockout format," said Thanh. "Like the Southeast Asian Games hosted in Vietnam three years ago, HCM City will make a successful World Cup for youth with available facilities and accommodation, showing the hospitality, friendship and martial arts power of the Vietnamese people," he added. At the event, the WTF will practise new changes in competition which promote fiercer matches on mats. After the Athens Olympic Games, taekwondo competitors have started competing on a smaller mat area in shorter times and under four supervisors. Vietnamese conterders have hope in the men's and women's lightweight categories, which helped them win medals at major meets. In the previous World Cup in South Korea, Vietnam took two bronze medals with Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu in the women's under-55kg and Bui Thu Hien in the 63kg divisions. Hien is a potential athlete for Vietnam after booking a berth in the third round at the World Taekwondo Championships in Madrid for the last two years. She also won a silver medal at the Asia Junior Taekwondo Championships in Kazakhstan last year. In the past years, taekwondo has set higher standards for Vietnam after Tran Hieu Ngan took the first Olympic silver in the women's U-57kg bracket in Sydney, and Dinh Thanh Long took the first bronze medal in the men's U-58kg at the World Taekwondo Championships in Madrid two years ago.
