Eastern Standard Time, the_dojang-request@martialartsresource.net writes: Has anyone ever heard of a magazine called Traditional Tae Kwon Do? It came out back in the late 70s and lasted only a few short years. They tried to provide accurate and legitimate martial arts coverage and would not back down from their advertisers who tried to rule their editing process. This resulted in their going bankrupt. When the late Sang Kyu Shim was Editor In Chief of TaeKwonDoTimes Magazine the coverage was even and fair. Can anyone honestly say that there currently exists a legitimate martial arts publication that promotes the true nature of the martial arts? I remember this magazine. My Taekwondo Instructor was a lack belt of Sang Kyu Shim and we belonged to his World Martial Arts association. My instrucotr had several of those magazines as well as early editions of Taekwondo Times when GM Shim was it's editor as well. That magazine was truthful and fairly unbiased in it's articles until Sang Kyu Shim's untimely death. Now it's no better than Black Belt Magazine. That a "serious" martial artist reads a magazine OR that a potential student reads it? Yeah, I generally view Black Belt magazine as a waste of trees....but it doesn't matter what I think. What matters is that potential students are reading it and come looking for a martial art school to train in. >From a professional stance, I'd rather see martial art press releases in mainstream magazines such as US Today, Time, Newsweak, etc. If we're talking technical training material, then sure, it would be nice if martial art magazines had more useful articles. However, that doesn't keep the magazine in business - it's the subscriptions AND ads. That's the way it is folks unless they're going to get a government grant (don't get me started in THAT direction *sigh*). Last week, a reporter called me and asked if I'd be interested in doing a story for my daytime profession. I agreed and he sent over some general questions. I realized he had NO clue as to what he was asking. So when he called back, I asked him (nicely - making a reporter mad is like making the waitress mad - dumb idea). He sheepishly laughed and said he didn't really understand but this certain mega company bought a ton of advertising space and the editor told him to do a story about the technology. We laughed about it and I gave him some contacts. Then he said he'd put me in his files if they ever did a story on something I could be of assistance on. This is an expensive magazine and pretty huge presence so I have no reason to doubt that this is simply the norm. They make their living moving product (magazines) AND selling ad space. The sooner I figured this out, the sooner I learned how to play the game. Our school falls into the part time, rent a room out of the Gymnastics place, yet we charge $90.00 a month and have 55 students. People are happy to pay comparable rates to commercial school for good training." ****************************************** There you go folks. Here is an example of someone that many of us have come to recognize from Jackson, MS events. Teaching part time out of a rented gymnastics room and still getting $90 a month. And yes, Austin, TX may be a bit higher lifestyle but not that much higher. I took at look at the registration page for your upcoming seminar with Grandmaster West and want to congratulate you for getting to start off the seminar.
