Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi there - long time reader, first time poster =) I have been a UK TKD follower since 1994 GTF, ITF and TAGB (i'm 30 now), training in various clubs i managed to reach red tag/3rd kup before i ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament whilst sparring (not recommended, makes a nasty sickening noise...!) I underwent surgery (hamstring graft) in September 2004, fully rehabilitated, training at the gym these days about 2 times/week - mostly cardio stuff for 45 mins each session. The surgeon saw me 18 months post op for the final review and i asked him if i should return to TKD or not, his answer to me was - "If you're not doing the sport professionally, or relying on it for an income then it's probably best to stay away from it!" So i have since been practising Tai-Chi, which i find is an excellent contrast to TKD - some very interesting movements and techniques. However the training "sessions" are no way near the type of physical exertion i have come to know (and love) with TKD. There's a club near to where i have just moved, i am tempted to go and check it out - even just to train once or twice to see how it goes... i would be happy just to start from scratch as a 10th Kup, in fact i would probably prefer to do that just so i can re-build strength in my knee.. I have taken out private healthcare since the ACL incident (4-7 year waiting list on our NHS for this op!) so if it happened again i'd get treated faster, but obviously i'd rather it didn't happen again! ;o) Anyone else been in this sort of situation before, or any advice from instructors? Many thanks - Taekwon! Getting on the mat and developing oneself into a martial artist doesn't come so cheap...it requires time and effort. I've known a lot of people who had their "files" in order, but they sure did suck when it came down to doing martial arts and sometimes their character/ethics/morality matrix wasn't so hot either. Then you meet someone who doesn't have any of the "paper", but they've sure put in the sweat equity and have made the most of the meager knowledge that's been passed onto them. The lesson? Judge people by what they can do, and discern the congruity between their words and actions. One is an evidence of ability, and the other is an evidence of character. Neither of which can be BOUGHT. How many of these schools, with viewing areas, offer a "free" lesson? As a recruiting tool, we offer a free class to prospective students. Now, depending on the student's level and their questions / concerns, this can range from just a short session of "beginner" front kick, punch, high block, etc. in a small interview room, to full participation in one class at their claimed level. This is a two way street. We find out about our prospective new student and, they find out about us. My question goes to the Martial Arts consumer's fear of buying something they discover they don't really want or won't use later and the potential loss of income to us from defaulted contracts / memberships. "Would you buy a horse sight unseen? Wouldn't you, at least, check the horse's health by inspecting its teeth?" Cheap and easy to obtain at from local sources. Personally, I think that a more casual short sleave sport shirt (aka golf shirt) and cotton slacks ala Dockers with TKD shoes would be more fitting, as a good ref has to move around almost as much as the competitors and may have to be able to move in to seperate them if things get heated. Ties are an anachronistic hold-over to fuedal european court practices and should have no place in a democratic society. Moreover, ties can be dangerous to those who where them. For example, they can get caught in machinery and strangle the wearer. Also, they can be used by an attacker to either strangle the wearer or to pull the wearers head down into a knee strike or into a desk or table top (my brother saw a bouncer get taken out this way). I urge all DD members to join me in my opposition to the neck tie. The Executive Council of the WTF is scheduled to decide on the new uniforms for official approval on July 24, 2006 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on the occasion of the 6th WTF World Junior Taekwondo Championships. It would mark the first change to the design of referee uniforms for gyeorugi competitions since the establishment of the WTF in 1973. Pending the Executive Council's approval, the new referee uniforms for gyeorugi competitions will be used as early as at the 1st WTF World Cup Team Teakwondo Championships scheduled for Sept. 14-17 in Bangkok, Thailand. The newly designed costumes for international poomsae referees will be used for the first time at the 1st WTF World Poomsae Taekwondo Championships in Seoul on Sept. 4-6, 2006. International referees of the WTF have long called for the change to the WTF's decades-old yellow uniforms. The referee uniform for gyeorugi competitions is composed of a jacket and a shirt of both sky-blue color, a matching blue tie and trousers of deep navy blue, while the uniform for poomsae competitions consists of a deep-navy-blue jacket, an ivory shirt, a purple tie and gray trousers. Able Fashion, a Korean company in downtown Seoul, produced the new uniforms. The WTF's ad-hoc committee on referee uniforms made a final approval of the new designs of referee uniforms on June 7, 2006, at their meeting at the headquarters of the WTF. Among the members were Mr. Eui-min Ko, chairman of the WTF Technical Committee; Mr. Hong-ki Kim, chairman of the WTF Refereeing Committee; and Mr. Manuel Colmenero Firvida, member of the Refereeing Committee. For further information on the uniform manufacturer, you can contact Mrs. Sun-mi Lim of Able Fashion at 82-(0)16-703-2071 or soojung617@hanmail.net. Brace worked OK, but during my E Dan test, lost so much water, could not tighten enough to keep the knee in place. Had surgery a year later, and have been working out since, with minor issues. I had a patella tendon graft. The damage done to my patella/tendon/tibia, was more of a problem that the ACL repair. To this day, it's been ten years now, my tibia where bone was removed still gets sore. The surgery got me into the weight room, which I believe was part of the reason I could return. I also take Glucosamine/Chondroitin daily. The crackling in the knees' has been reduced. My career requires me to maintain a higher degree of physical fitness, once a year mandatory fit test. I have passed each year since the surgery. Until you strengthen your knee, be careful when you pivot.
