Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi guys, First of all, thanks for all your feedback - i wasn't expecting so many people to respond, clearly this is quite a common injury! I went along to the class last night, having spoken with the instructor by phone the day before just to make sure it was ok, and it went really well. He has agreed that i can keep my grade from 2 years ago (provided i can produce a copy of my certificate) and should not grade for at least 6 months just to brush up on technique etc. The instructors were great - very understanding. They told me that i should make sure to ease myself into classes again gently, not to give it 100% at the start. Also, if i felt like sitting out at any point just to go ahead. We mostly did upper body work out, punching etc, but i was already sweating buckets by the end of the warm up! Felt great afterwards though. To be honest, I'm not sure if a brace is a great idea - i have heard some people saying that it prevents your joint area from strengthening itself naturally. I agree with the advice about building up strength doing ham and quad extensions - this is what got me through the initial injury when i didn't know what had happened - i managed to build up enough support to run 15 minutes regularly and still spar, with occasional jolts of pain when landing awkwardly. Eventually i had the scan which confirmed the ACL was ruptured. I also swear by using glucosamine/chondroitin (synflex liquid is best, i find) and cod liver oil capsules daily. The physio only lasted 6 months of weekly hour long sessions, after which they encourage you to get back into sport but i didn't feel ready at that stage. Now i'm 20 months post-op, i feel alot more confident about stability, walking has been great for it i think - especially down on the beach, in and around rocky paths and with a dog on a leash (!) which i think helps train you for unpredictable strain on knee joints. Anyway, i'll take care when pivoting, keep building up strength at the gym (must try that alphabet thing, and get them to buy a wobble board!!) and avoid sparring for as long as possible - although if i remember correctly you have to demonstrate sparring at senior gradings for ITF? I think a greater challenge is convincing my other half that i'm not being "wreckless" by going back into training - she's not impressed so far! Thanks again for all the help! Does anyone out there have any good and reasonable suggestions? I have the design already made up and can send it to anyone who may do this kind of thing on the side or would just like to look at it.
