To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The General wasn't the only one guilty of that line of thinking. Almost every Korean instructor that I met during the 70's had a superiority complex. Occidentals could not understand nor perform the arts as well as they could. In one of Mas Oyama's first book he puts in the introduction that he felt Americans could not understand his art in a deep passionate manner. To go beyond the physical. After being around Americans and watching the way we were, he admitted he had made a mistake. Perhaps some of this is still going on, I don't know but I do know that when I was most heavily involved back in the 70's & 80's these terrible attitudes were quite common. SC Riggs Michael Atamian wrote: In 1957 General Choi Hong Hi was a general...nothing more! It was HE who started the trend where everyone starved for dan rank and other niceties that were undeserving. It was HE who started the Korean trend towards becoming a 9th dan on the "fast track". It was HE who used this attitude of superiority and hubris that caused Choson Do and other smaller art forms to wither away and die, never being shared with the outside world. Had I not been honored to take it to America ours would be dead too. It was HE who stifled real progress in Korean martial arts thinking he was "the one" to be the sovereign leader of all Korean martial arts. HE started the martial arts "cult leader" phenomenon. I was there in 1957 and 1958 and those of you who were as well know exactly what I mean. So much for dan rank. My sympathies go out to everyone who still believes that HE was a true martial arts master and an innovator. Choson Do barely managed to survive in spite of HIS interfering and meddling but many others did not, and this is sad as many of those arts that died would have been of great value to today's martial arts practitioners. Take away all those organizations, federations, and the like and your TRUE martial arts worth will be measured in the number of youth whose futures were touched by your leadership and caring. I say we all return to the rank system of novice, student, disciple, instructor and master fitting in wherever our abilities allow. Hey, it seems to work well for The Chinese whose only real vice are making chop socky movies. fraternally, Michael A. They were "old school" and the last of a special breed. fraternally, Michael A. Atamian I would have to agree, I trained in North Carolina with an Instructor of Grand Master Sang Kyu Shim from Michigan. He trained in a very old fashioned traditional way and spoke of the values expressed by GM Shim. I have found very few school of the calibre of Shim's and most are from the Old school. It was great to see (Grand) Master West and his band of traveling mutants in Austin. Master Thomas as always was a fantastic host. Thank you very much to Master Dexter Mangum, Master Instructor Wayne Watkins, Dr. Dave Collup (sp?), Mr. Todd "the toad" Williams and Mr. Ricky Thornberg for all your help and friendship. I am looking forward to seeing you all in Jackson this September for another fantastic Jackson get together. GM West as always you are a fantastic teacher and I am proud to be your student.
