Subject: Kukkiwon Certificates Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2006 09:15:10 -0600 From: "Michelle George" This email is to all the instructors that submitted Kukkiwon applications to the USA Taekwondo Dan Office in late April and May. While I was at the Junior Olympics the USA Taekwondo offices received the Kukkiwon applications that were ordered in May. Upon my return, I began mailing the certificates out but then noticed several errors Kukkiwon made to the order. Many of the Kukkiwon ID cards were processed with the wrong picture-if this occurred I did not send you the card. The other error on the card was in the year of the date of birth-the card may state 2093 instead of 1993. If this mistake occurred I went ahead and sent the card. Kukkiwon has already informed me that they are remaking all of the cards, so everyone will receive a new card. Another major error Kukkiwon made was that some of the Dan numbers do not match the name that is actually on the certificate. If your certificate is between the numbers 05245393-05245403 please contact me. Also, if you notice any information on your certificate(s) is incorrect please contact me immediately. They aren't the only game in town and their new owners must think they are still back in Seoul! You must have hit a nerve if their only comeback was to ban you for life. It does seem a bit excessive but you know how those Koreans think..There way or the highway. They forget that it was Americans who put them on the map...and yes, I think that rip offs are rampant...who do they blame for that? My wife was the biggest surprise of all. She's always been behind me 100% in everything that I chose to do, but I was really taken aback by the support she showed me. She wasn't worried one bit. She just told me to focus and do what I know how to do, and that everything else would take care of itself. She has much more confidence in me than I have in myself. She can't wait until I fight again. With a wife like this who needs enemies!!! I think my Mom was a little pissed afterwards when she found out what I had done. I haven't talked to her yet, but my wife gave her the lowdown. Some comments to the effect of "no f***ing 35-year-old man needs to be doing that" got back to me, but it's all good. Age is in your head. Physically I'm good. I have a little bit of a scratch around my left eye that I think came off of his glove when he was trying to fight out of my guard. Other than that, I'm not sore nor have I noticed any major bruises anywhere. I'm actually going to put in a hard training session tonight at the house, and then get right back to boxing and rolling with my training partners on Thursday. Mentally I'm in a strange place right now. It's hard to get back into the swing of everyday life. Sunday night when I wrote my initial post at the house, I was in a very calm and peaceful mood. If I had to sum it up in one word I would call it "satisfied". Yesterday almost felt like a mild depression...a "post partum" if you will. Today is much better, I'm able to concentrate on work again, the initial high has faded, and I'm excited about deciding whether or not to pursue this fight game a little more. My thoughts on everything are varied. The experience is behind me, and I have fond memories that I will carry forever...but, I find myself already starting to look toward the future. I really didn't get to train for this fight because of the short notice, so I'm excited about how I could do if I pushed my strength and conditioning and really went through a pre-fight training cycle. I'm already planning around technical issues. For example, my grappling is pretty good, but it's built around sport jiu-jitsu and submission wrestling. So, now my thoughts are starting around working with my friend and coach to get an MMA specific ground game going. I also know I need a lot of work around takedowns and takedown defenses...that's the weakest part of my game and one that I want to concentrate on so that I can control where and when a fight goes down (or doesn't at all). So many things to think about... My confidence and self-esteem are the main things that have benefited. I've always been able to compete and take care of myself...it just so happened that Saturday night I actually did something to prove that to myself. For years, I've had friends tell me to compete...that I would do good...that I had talent. I never listened. So, if nothing else now I can always say "yep, I did that"...not to be cocky or arrogant about it...I know where I stand on the food chain and I've got a long way to go before I consider stepping in with a higher level of competition. But, it just feels good to take a run at something like this and train shoulder-to-shoulder with these young guys that are coming up. In some ways...I feel like I've been given a second chance. Sounds strange but it's true. I may never be a champion, but I can say that I've done something that I've dreamed about and fantasized about for a good many years. There's only one word for that...it's called LIVING. And it feels really good. Take care. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "David P. That is why none of the serious Martial artists that I know read or subscribe to the rag. There doesn't seem to be a serious, honest MA publication out there... Wow! Unfortunately, the martial arts we love come from men. Men are not perfect, by far, but when men come together for the greater good, you would think that they would look to truth, justice and the betterment of mankind as their aim. -But, when their goal is not truth, but rather their own agenda, they lose the credibility that accompanies the joining of honorable men. My respects sir, and my condolences to the Dojang on the loss of another MA publication. Only a true fighter can understand that call to the arena. Mike Tyson seems like a genius when reflecting on his comment that "Everybody has a plan until they get hit." Most important thing I took from your post is that you just can't give up and quit as things are constantly changing. Thanks again for this great post and many of the other posts you have made over the last few years. It is a sorry state of affairs when this does not surprise me. Since I started in Tang Soo Do in 1973 I have observed this "attitude" among many, many Korean so called masters. In my opinion a true master involves more than knowledge and skill, there is also integrity and concern for the art and his students. I think we can see that the problem I wrote about in January is now fully exposed. When there are things wrong with the administration of martial arts and we refuse to correct it, refuse to regulate it and now refuse even to discuss it; we set ourselves up for ridicule and the ruination of the arts that each of us love so deeply. At times we hit hard here and at times we're a bit intolerant but being afraid is something that we martial artists are NOT known for. Let the free exchange of ideas continue even if it means that someone here thinks I'm a babboon!
