Is there any footage we can watch? -----Original Message----- From: Stovall, Craig [mailto:CStovall@nucorar.com] Sent: 25 July 2006 19:43 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] First MMA fight...the experience, the lessons, <<>> Tom...thanks for asking. My wife was the biggest surprise of all. She's always been behind me 100% in everything that I chose to do, but I was really taken aback by the support she showed me. She wasn't worried one bit. She just told me to focus and do what I know how to do, and that everything else would take care of itself. She has much more confidence in me than I have in myself. She can't wait until I fight again. With a wife like this who needs enemies!!! I think my Mom was a little pissed afterwards when she found out what I had done. I haven't talked to her yet, but my wife gave her the lowdown. Some comments to the effect of "no f***ing 35-year-old man needs to be doing that" got back to me, but it's all good. Age is in your head. Physically I'm good. I have a little bit of a scratch around my left eye that I think came off of his glove when he was trying to fight out of my guard. Other than that, I'm not sore nor have I noticed any major bruises anywhere. I'm actually going to put in a hard training session tonight at the house, and then get right back to boxing and rolling with my training partners on Thursday. Mentally I'm in a strange place right now. It's hard to get back into the swing of everyday life. Sunday night when I wrote my initial post at the house, I was in a very calm and peaceful mood. If I had to sum it up in one word I would call it "satisfied". Yesterday almost felt like a mild depression...a "post partum" if you will. Today is much better, I'm able to concentrate on work again, the initial high has faded, and I'm excited about deciding whether or not to pursue this fight game a little more. My thoughts on everything are varied. The experience is behind me, and I have fond memories that I will carry forever...but, I find myself already starting to look toward the future. I really didn't get to train for this fight because of the short notice, so I'm excited about how I could do if I pushed my strength and conditioning and really went through a pre-fight training cycle. I'm already planning around technical issues. For example, my grappling is pretty good, but it's built around sport jiu-jitsu and submission wrestling. So, now my thoughts are starting around working with my friend and coach to get an MMA specific ground game going. I also know I need a lot of work around takedowns and takedown defenses...that's the weakest part of my game and one that I want to concentrate on so that I can control where and when a fight goes down (or doesn't at all). So many things to think about... My confidence and self-esteem are the main things that have benefited. I've always been able to compete and take care of myself...it just so happened that Saturday night I actually did something to prove that to myself. For years, I've had friends tell me to compete...that I would do good...that I had talent. I never listened. So, if nothing else now I can always say "yep, I did that"...not to be cocky or arrogant about it...I know where I stand on the food chain and I've got a long way to go before I consider stepping in with a higher level of competition. But, it just feels good to take a run at something like this and train shoulder-to-shoulder with these young guys that are coming up. In some ways...I feel like I've been given a second chance. Sounds strange but it's true. I may never be a champion, but I can say that I've done something that I've dreamed about and fantasized about for a good many years. There's only one word for that...it's called LIVING. And it feels really good. Take care. _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list, 2,100 members The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang **************************************************************************** SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES Go to London Fire at www.london-fire.gov.uk/firesafety This email is confidential to the addressee only. The organization I will be taking a fighter to is ISCF. You can see it at www.ISCFMMA.com As for the Gracie Academy it is Rorions Gracies school but Henner Gracie will be teaching our private lessons. I am just as excited about the Moo Duk Kwan nationals, becasue I will be training with HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim and many other seniors like Victor Martinov Sa Bom Nim. These people are in many ways better martial artist than what we see in the UFC, they just don't beat people up in a cage. They are rooted in History, Tradition, Philosophy, Discipline/Respect, and Technique. Although the UFC and MMA is a great thing IMHO it is only a small part of Martial Arts training. It has been said here before, Martial Arts is more than fighting. It is also more than just History and Philosophy. A martial Artist is a scholar with good understanding of these 5 Moo Do principals, but they should be able to apply there technique, and that is were MMA IMHO becomes a prooving ground. It was the second bronze medal in as many days for the U.S. squad. Bernard Posey (Greensboro, N.C.) won bronze in the male featherweight division on Wednesday. The event runs through Sunday. Craig, 15, recorded wins over Ly Thi Kim Hue of Vietnam (3-2), Nikolett Herczeg of Hungary (7-0) and Gu Xiaoling of China (4-0) to reach the semifinals. There she faced Korea's Kim Min Ji and lost a tough 5-4 decision to the eventual gold medalist. Thailand's Ratikran Thongkhao won the silver medal and Chinese Taipei's Lee Hsing Hua claimed the other bronze medal. "I was very anxious to fight today," said Craig. "The first fight was the toughest, just getting used to the atmosphere. I gave it my all and left everything on the mat, so I have no regrets." Female finweight Kristen Frisch (Avon Lake, Ohio), 15, advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Ireland (3-0) and France (6-1). In the quarterfinal round she fought toe-to-toe with Spain. With the match tied 2-2 at the end of the third round, the fighters went to sudden death to determine the winner. However, neither fighter scored in the extra session so the match was decided by the five referees on the basis of superiority and they awarded a 3-2 superiority decision to Spain. In male finweight action, Jericho Yabut (Canyon Country, Calif.), 13, defeated Karayev Ishankuli of Turkmenistan, 6-(-1), in the opening round, but then fell to Chinese Taipei's Tan Yung Ho, 7-2. Kazakhstan's Bekkassymov Zhalgas won the gold medal, while Thailand's Soravit Lanhanimit took silver and Azerbaijan's Eldar Gurbanov and Jordan's Ahmad Xasen Alzamel claimed the bronze medals. Matthew Yim (Ashburn, Va.), 16, lost his opening match to Mexico's Johann Weigen, 4-1, in the male flyweight division. Lee Seung Won of Korea won the gold medal over Bahrain's Abdulrahim A.Hameed. Thailand's Jerranat Nakaviroj and Chinese Taipei's Hsu Chia Lin took the bronze medals. The third day of competiton on Friday will feature lightweights Jermaine James (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Cheryl Krause (Fairfax Station, Va.), and welterweights Kasey Mallard (Dallas, Texas) and John Hansel (Ashburn, Va.). --__--__-- Message: 12 Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2006 20:57:11 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Thailand rise to top Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Thailand rise to top in World Taekwondo By HUY NGUYEN Saigon Times Daily (SGT-HCMC) Thailand secured two gold, four silver and two bronze medals in the first two days of the sixth World Junior Taekwondo Championships 2006 in HCMC, thus overtaking Vietnam to lead the tourneys. Buttre Puedpong beat Lee Ji Min of Korea in the final of the 42-kilogram women's category to take the second gold medal for Thailand, which had already gained one gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the opening day of the tournament. Korea came second after their excellent performances yesterday. Their athletes earned two gold, two silver and two bronze medals although they did not get any gold on the first day of the tournament. The two gold medalists are Kim Min Ji in the 44-kilogram of women's category and Lee Seung Won, 48-kilogram of men's category. Vietnam did not win any medal in yesterday's competition, despite their leading position in the first day with two gold medals by Tran Thi Ngoc Truc and Hoang Ha Giang. Vietnam's Bui Van Tuyen also won a bronze medal in the men's 55-kilogram category in the first day. The hosts dropped to third place with two gold and one bronze medals. Yesterday, Vu Thi Hau of Vietnam was the only athlete competing in the quarterfinals of women's 42-kilogram category but she was defeated by Lee Jin Min from Korea. Today athletes will compete in men's events in the 59-kilogram and 63-kilogram categories, and in women's events in the 52-kilogram and 55-kilogram groups. More than 1,000 competitors from 75 countries and territories joined the annual competition at Phu Tho Indoor Stadium slated to wrap up on Sunday. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
