Vandenover (I think I'm misspelling that) wrote the rule book for the chanbara association for him, and was a United States Karate Alliance guy. The rules are pretty much the exact same and wording is almost identical to the USKA rulebook. Abbott has spent alot of money getting the chanbara thing off the ground, probably as much money (or more) as I've seen any one individual put into a business idea, TONS of marketing/advertising dollars. The equipment is a bit costly, the weapons run 30-60 each, depending on the item, and helments run about 40 bucks each. If you do the chanbara program, look into buying two youth length swords, two adult length swords, and either two youth and two adult helments, or two medium sized helments, and they'll just be a bit big for the kids. They will love it, its alot of fun, but it doesn't necessarily build your 'sword' knowledge. If you want to tap his collective knowledge, you will need to bring him in. One year, at USKA worlds, instead of warming up or judging, I decided to watch him teach a sword (not foam) session that was in progress during Forms/Kata competition. I was really impressed with his attention to detail, but I am sure he knew he was on display that day. You might do well to try and speak with him over email, and if the Chanbara thing is not big in your Market, then maybe offer to work with him on getting some schools together for a joint seminar, if he can offer you the discount for being the host. He is still trying to get the program huge exposure, so he might be willing to just do it for travel costs alone, in hopes to pick up a new market for his product/programs. Hope this all helps. Charlie Veuleman <<<<<<<<<<<<< have a question for those members that have a background in either Japanese kendo or Korean Haidong gumdo. How much do the two arts differ? Aside from the fact that they call the same strikes, cuts, and defenses different names due to language, is one technically superior? I know it's hard, if not impossible to say one martial art is superior to another, but my understanding is that the Koreans didn't have much weapon use due to the fact that they were banned. In the Muye Dobo Tonji, didn't the Koreans basically hire the Japanese and Chinese to school them in military use of edged weapons? I guess my question is this. I am looking to study either the Japanese or Korean art of swordsmanship. I want the real deal - a traditional art form. Which has the deeper roots? Also has anyone heard of Master Dana Abbott? Does anyone use his programs or have taken his seminars? I have met and spoken with Master Abbott several times and he is a very nice man. I was wondering if anyone has some input? Mr. Heaps, No offense, Sir, but may I respectfully suggest reading some Korean history? Because Korea was indeed 'squeezed between Japan and China,' the result for the peninsula was, has been, and is anything BUT sovereignty. pil seung, Don Ross I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure. - Clarence Darrow --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "George Peters" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2006 10:18:11 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Dakin Burdick TSD-Kung Fu Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir, I wish you could have been there to experince the language barrier thing along with the explanation. The young man was a new arrival at the time and just starting to learn very basic english. It took a lot of brainwracking to come up with an explanation he would understand, but in that time period, I must say I came a long way in sorting things out for myself also. Thank you for your always welcome input.
