Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just when you think you've heard it all along comes this. This kid, about 11 walked into my dojang today with his older brother. He interrrupted my class to ask if the students would bow to him since he is a second dan...not poom mind you..second dan. I asked him to be seated and hold his comments until class was over. He sat relatively quietly but made disparaging comments that were overheard regarding one of the students. He then asked to see "MY" credentials which are hanging conspicuously in front. When asked he told me that he didn't have kukkiwon certification and "lost" his masters certification. My due respects to Sid on wanting to prevent child abuse. But for 10 cents I would have given this little brat the hardest Op Chogi in his butt that I could muster! I said to him," Look for your masters certificate and when you find it, bring it to another school. In my opinion I wouldn't award you white belt yet!" This takes the cake. The others (il, etc.) are listed as Korean. I have had it put to me to think of it as "first' rather than "one". I'm not so sure about that, though. I feel that the usage of these terms relates to two things: The originator of the forms was supposed to have brought them to Japan from China. Secondly, until the recent past, (as explained to me by a Chinese friend) Koreans could read Chinese characters even if they did not speak the language, and there were many "carry-overs from Chinese", hence the usage of these terms. I am by no means a linguistic expert, but it certainly sounds plausible. Respectfully, George, who wonders what Bruce would say about this? --__--__-- Message: 3 From: sidtkd@aol.com Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2006 17:44:36 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Chodan Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net My recollection is that Chodan was the plain black belt you received after passing all tests. Siz months later you were given the trimmed dobak and rmbroidered belt. This was so because it took that long to get a certificate signed by the grandmaster. My Ildan was in Moo Duk Kwan in 1967 signed by Hwang Kee. The chodan came from my master. Nowadays it takes 3-4 weeks to get first dan from Korea and Chodan is totally unnecessary. Cho means beginning and sometimes 1st. Dan means level. In the Pyong Ahn Hyung, cho dan would mean the first level of the Pyong Ahn series. Actually, I believe, Ee Dan used to be Cho Dan, but that's a whole different story. In Chil Sung Il Ro, Ee Ro etc. (or Yuk Ro Hyung) the "Ro" means way, path, or division. Not to be confused with the character for Do or Dao, also "The Path" or "the way."
