Also I believe Master McCauley's instructor Master Shipley, is if I remember correctly is living in Rome. Speaks Fluid Korean. I witnessed him speaking with the Koreans during the 50th anniversary of Moo Duk Kwan in Korea 1995. He was translating some english for some of the senior Korean instructors there. Master Shipley dan number is 4825 if my records are correct. Making him very senior himself. JCGet more from the Web. Shp is 10, sip sa = 14, E is 2 so 20 = e sip, sam sip = 30, sam sip sa = 34. ************************** You will want to learn both sets of numbers, since they are both used depending on the context. One example where you need to know both is telling time. Hours use the Hana, tul, set, etc. Where minutes use the il, i, sam, etc. So, 1:14 would be Hanshi, shipsa bun. 12:20 would be yoltushi ishipbun. For the first set, hana, tul, set. Ten is yol, and then you just add the two. 11= yolhana, 12=yoltul, etc. But then the numbers for 20, 30, etc. are different, so you need to learn those. 20= sumol, so 21= sumol hana, and so forth. For the other set, it is a bit easier, since 10=ship, and 20= i ship (2 tens), 30= sam ship, and so on. Therefore: 15= ship oh, 25= iship oh, and so on. Once you learn the numbers, you learn the clasifiers to add to the numbers for counting things. This gets even more confusing some times. Above, using time, shi is for hours, bun is for minutes. Other things have different clasifiers. A common one for low number of things is gye. This is usually used with the first set of numbers. For example, if I wanted two apples, I would say Sagwa (apple) tugye (tul plus counter and the L is dropped) Chuseyo (please give me) Bon was the classifier used for HKD techniques. Every self-defense technique was numbered in the curriculum as a teaching tool. For these, we used the il, i, sa, sam, oh, etc. So if I wanted clarification on the 5th technique of the set for a specific belt, I would ask about oh bon. Number 5 with the bon counter. I hope this was clear. The best thing is to go get yourself a Korean language book that has both sets of numbers. Even the little phrase books have these. The romanization above is mine, and you will find it differs from what book you are learning from. One, two, three etc are know as cardinal numbers. First, second, third are ordinal numbers. In Hangul...hanna,dul, set...are cardinal numbers and the ordinal numbers are Il, Ee, Sam etc. First set of numbers relate to quantity and the second set to position. There is no such thing as formal and informal numbers. Second, after we count to "yol" or ten we formulate the 11 as yol-hanna, yol-dul etc. Twenty is samul and thus 21 is samul-hanna. Last, there is an easier way to become a master than in your sleep. Just simply call yourself master, buy an embroidered belt and of course you will be a 10th dan. Can't be easier than that can it? Pimol Srivikorn, chairman of the organizing committee, on Tuesday (Aug. 29, 2006) presided over the press conference on the staging of the prestigious tournament at the Intercontinental Hotel. Pimol, the secretary general of the Taekwondo Association of Thailand, said that the TAT's bid to become the host country was successful last year. He said that the TAT's preparation for hosting the tournament is also in progress. This is to make sure that the Championships will be a great success not only to meet satisfaction of all participating teams but also to celebrate the nationwide celebration for the diamond jubilee of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne. "We have been preparing for the championships for more than one year in an effort of making the competition a perfect one," Pimol said in the meeting. "We just want to give our visitors and all participants tremendous impression. The lodging, food menu, competition venue and safety measurement for officials and athletes from all participating teams are already well-prepared. We (TAT) hope that by staging the world-class tournament, Thai taekwondo will be significantly promoted to the international standard." When asked about the Thai exponents's chances in the top-flight tournament, Pimol said, "The TAT has its sight firmly set on its exponents to win some medals from the competition. We are also hopeful that our athletes will make the top four in the team's event. However, I admit that exponents from South Korea, China, Iran are Chinese Taipei are strong and it's not easy to beat them. Many of them are champions from the World Championships and the Olympics. To match them competitively is an uphill task." Pimol added that Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop will be the guest of honor during the opening ceremony on Sept. 14, while local TV Channel 11 will record the events from 2 p.m. during the competition days. Meanwhile, Pricha Thortrakul, advisor of the TAT, said that most of the Thai exponents to take part in the championships are the main players who will don the Thai colors in the December Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. Thailand will field a total of 12 exponents in the 2006 Bangkok WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships. Patiwat Thongsalab, who won the gold medal in the last year's Izmir-hosted World University Games, and the Athens Olympic bronze medalist Yaowapa Boorapolchai will lead the Thai assault. Thailand team: - Men: Patiwat Thongsalab (men's lightweight), Chatchawal Khaola-or (men's finweight), Dech Suttikulkarn (men's flyweight), Nacha Panthong (men's bantamweight), Chanuttha Thanarerkchai (men's featherweight), Dam Srichan (men's welterweight). - Women: Yaowapa Boorapolchai (women's finweight), Nutthaya Sangsasithorn (women's flyweight), Laksamee Yoomankong (women's bantamweight), Channapas Premwaew (women's featherweight), Watcharaporn Dongnoi (women's lightweight), Rapatkorn Prasobsuk (women's heavyweight). --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2006 16:07:27 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] WTF Competition Format Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net WTF World Cup Team Championships Competition Format [Individual Events: 8 categories each for men and women] Single Elimination System according to the draw of lots Same as the WTF World Taekwondo Championships [Team Events] 1. 8 best teams each for men and women according to the results of individual events (WTF point system). 2. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams will be seeded. Competitions shall continue until the last athlete, regardless of the result of the previous matches. Results will be recorded as 3:2 or 4:1 or 5:0. 6. All the athletes (maximum 5) of each team will enter together and sit on the chairs prepared along the Competition Area, and will stay there until the final match. If the loss records are the same, the team with a win in the heavier weight categories will have priority. In case this comes out to be the same as well, then a win at the next heavier weight category will come first. In the event that all the above are equal, a team that has the biggest point gap (i.e. points earned -- points lost) comes next. If the point gaps are the same, a team that earned more points will come first. What you are probably not aware of is that Michael is the oldest of seven siblings, and has always been a leader and role model to his siblings and his students. As a result of this incident, Michael is unable to work and contribute to his family as he once has. Instead, he is faced with an enormous amount of medical bills that are not covered by basic medical insurance. I feel that it is during times of tragedy such as this that we can all shine as part of the same USA TKD family. So, I urge you to send a check to the Michael Tang fund c/o USA Taekwondo, to make a contribution to help Michael and his family at this time of need. We will be accepting collections on behalf of Michael and his family until the end of the year. We also hope to organize a benefit tournament for Michael in the Boston area later this year. I'm confident that we will all be able to come together to support Michael and his family during this time of need.
