His real "understanding" I believe, came from O'Sensei Kim, and an odder pair together I never saw........... O'Sensei Kim was great at Tai Chi and many other arts, and was the best Archivist and Storyer of the martial arts that has ever been. McCarthy, Lowry and others are doing well at memorializing, but Richard Kim was one in a trillion. thank you so much for asking and provoking some fond memories for me. NOW, your turn on one of yours......................... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray" To: Sent: Saturday, September 09, 2006 5:47 PM Subject: [The_Dojang] Peter Urban > > ... - I came up through Peter Urban Goju(my main style), > > though I have trained in many arts and systems over 38 years(as specialized > > learnings for specific projects and purposes). > > I still consider myself a "Peter Urban" goju man .... > > Tell us a bit about training with Peter Urban. > > I believe he studied with the likes of Richard Kim, Gogen Yamaguchi, and > Mas Oyama.!. yes? > > Ray Terry > rterry@idiom.com > _______________________________________________ > The_Dojang mailing list, 2,100 members > The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net > Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource > Standard disclaimers apply > http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang > > > -- > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.12.2/442 - Release Date: 9/8/2006 --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Steven Berkowitz" To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Peter Urban Date: Sat, 9 Sep 2006 20:56:09 -0700 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net sorry to be back in..................... Yes, Urban also trianed with Oyama. here's a blog entry from Malanoski back in '04, shortly after Maestro's death. (Steven M is the guy I turned my dojo over to when he came to town, Cape Coral, Fl., with taller rank than me under Urban) Steven M's last line is exactly the type of "connection" Maestro formed with those who "got it". Steven Malanoski 04-08-2004, 10:18 PM Thanks guys, As to him being a fighter, yes, he had undergone numerous surgeries about 12 or 13 years ago, and then a heart attack on his 60th birthday, then a couple of years ago, the final bout with lung cancer in which he had a lung removed. He died of kidney failure with a blood infection and pneumonia jumping in. He was sedated for a couple days, and when the sedation was stopped, he never came to. However he left, then came back, twice, and exited this reality on the third round. Even unconcious "to us," he fought death to the end. How did he live? Unafraid. How did he die? Unafraid. He is still very much alive. If you would like to see him Look into my eyes, the next time you see me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steven Berkowitz" To: Sent: Saturday, September 09, 2006 8:41 PM Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Peter Urban > BTW, Ray, > > Yes, Urban was a student of Yamafuchi Gogen, up to sandan. > His real "understanding" I believe, came from O'Sensei Kim, and an odder > pair together I never saw........... > > O'Sensei Kim was great at Tai Chi and many other arts, and was the best > Archivist and Storyer of the martial arts that has ever been. For the past 7 years I've been with a great group of people, training in a hole-in-the-wall facility without enough room for testing or tournaments (although we make do). I definitely am only still there because of the quality of the instruction and dedication of the people. To have a facility like yours, (in addition to, no doubt, superior folks :) ) would be nirvana. One thing we did do a number of years back was go to all Swain mat flooring. It was a substantial upgrade from carpet-over-concrete, but I do find the seams between mats annoying/distracting. No one's gotten hurt over the years, so apparently they're not a safety issue. > You can see pictures under the photos section/link.
