I could get you hundreds if not thousands of very weird stories about things he's done and been seen doing them. He was, and will remain, larger than life, larger than his many mistakes, foibles and failures.. He, and another 15 or so east coast nutcases, are the true pioneers of the karate world in the USA, and they all have stories, weird yet true. Well let em roll! I think it's because of "nutcases " like these that we all get hooked into training that becomes part of us. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Steven Berkowitz" To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Peter Urban Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2006 14:23:34 -0700 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net many colors ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray" To: Sent: Sunday, September 10, 2006 11:13 AM Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Peter Urban > > thank you so much for asking and provoking some fond memories for me. As a martial artist, to me, the training is a whole lot more important than the facility, uniforms, or even the rank of an instructor. As a parent, appearance (and smell) does matter which is the direction we went. To the people reading, since email is expressionless and I've taken some lumps on "by golly real deal 'I'll never sell out' martial artists", I'm not implying or referring to anyone's school or anything other than face value of a professional facility makes it easier for my bride to teach full time in an effort to replace her income (and benefits) for our family. For those considering going pro, appearance (you, your facility, and anything representing your school such as ads) and smell are the first two things on the "fix it" list. :) I was telling another person, If I had to do it over, I'd go with red & blue puzzle mats. Only problem with red is it excites the younger students. I noticed the younger students were a lot calmer when we switched to the woodgrain. Swain mats are nice, real nice. I talked to Mr. Swain a few months ago about his mats after working on them for several hours. They allowed me to pivot for kicks and made taking falls easier. Since our school will be adding Hapkido in the near future, it's a important that we find a mat firm enough for kicking and yet soft enough for falling/rolling. Before his Judo seminar, he used some wide clear tape to hold the mats together. It worked but I'm hoping he comes up with a better solution. If he does, we'd consider the Swain mats but the room is not perfectly square and you can't trim a Swain mat like you can a puzzle mat. And, an unsolicited plug for Swain's seminars. If you get to go, he's a heck of great guy with an impeccable bio. The Hong Kong star told Press Association in Venice that he wants to be more than a martial arts master - and is ready for another challenge. "I've been willing to change my roles for quite some time. I'm fed up with these roles," the 52-year-old actor was quoted as saying. "We all know that the life of an action movie actor is quite a short career. I already consider myself a myth for still being around today." "I want to put myself to the test by interpreting and acting different characters," he said. "I would like people in (the) future to see my movies and consider me an actor who can act in action movies, not just someone who knows about martial arts and happens to be an actor." Chan - whose screen credits include "Shanghai Noon" and "Shanghai Knights" - presented his latest movie, "Rob-B-Hood," at the Venice Film Festival on Friday. "When people come up to me in the street in America they say `Ah, Jackie Chan!' and do all the action moves," he said. "No one does that to Robert De Niro." If you missed this past weekend you should give yourself a boot to the head! If you don't I am sure there will be plenty of those who were there to take care of that for you in February :) For the Texas folks, GM West will be in Houston on Saturday November 4th for an all day seminar at Braeswood Martial Arts. Don't miss this opportunity for some one on one. Thank you also to all the Masters who took the time to come to Mississippi for all of us. But along with that, say former students, he also taught them discipline and confidence, leading them to far greater accomplishments in life. Johnson, 73, of Ypsilanti, died early Friday morning of heart failure. Johnson, who learned martial arts while serving in the Army in Germany, trained thousands of area students while operating a variety of area studios for the last 50 years. His first club was in Willis, and his latest club was at 105 S. Park St. in Ypsilanti. He was a ninth-degree black belt in tae kwon do, of which there are only about 20 in the world. He was president and founder of the North American Tae Kwon Do Association, and served as a judge in the 1988 Olympic trials. Johnson and his wife, Jamie, established local schools in Dundee and Dexter as well as in San Antonio, Virginia and Kansas. "He was an incredible man,'' said Jeff Winkle, who studied under Johnson for seven years. "He helped shape many lives for so many years.'' Winkle, 33, a psychology student at Washtenaw Community College, credits Johnson with helping him reach his potential. "He taught people how to become more than who they are,'' Winkle said. "He taught you to value every day the best you can, even the bad days.'' Yet despite his offering such support, Winkle and Nick Lucchetti, another student, agreed that their teacher rarely minced words. If you were having a bad time, he was there for you, but when Master Johnson walked into the room, everyone was quiet, said Lucchetti, 26. Lucchetti, an Ypsilanti native who studied Chinese and business at the University of Hawaii, is enrolled in law school at American University in Washington. "If not for Master Johnson, I would not have been in the university system at all,'' said Lucchetti, who studied under Johnson for 14 years. Jamie, Johnson's wife of nearly 20 years, said she would continue teaching martial arts to area youngsters. "I'm going to follow his legacy,'' she said, citing their bond. "We are a very good team.'' Johnson is also survived by four children and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Janowiak Funeral Home, 320 N. Washington St., Ypsilanti. The funeral service will be in the home's chapel on Monday at 10 a.m. --__--__-- Message: 9 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2006 23:41:52 -0400 From: hapkidodavetn@aol.com Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Nutrition for MA's Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I also liked "The Fighters Body" and would also recommend "The Science Of Martial Arts Training", by Charles Staley Dave www.unitedhapkido.org ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL.
