I seem to recall someone on the list [Mr. Woodward ?] seeking a hapkido dojang in that area without any responses. Does anyone have any info/recommendations on a TKD and /or kumdo [or even. gasp, an Iaido school] dojang near my new home? Even TSD would be OK, but would probably pass on WTF style... Thanks. pil seung, Don Ross Practice safe eating - use condiments. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Grandmaster Won Sun Jung To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2006 08:24:09 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Hello everyone, my name is Marcus I am a student of Grandmaster Won Sun > Jung in Rockford, Illinois he is a ninth degree black belt in tae kwon > do and a tenth degree in hapkido I believe. He authored the manual in 1959 with second edition print in 1965. Second president was; Kang Ik Lee (one of my teachers). Third president was; Chong Soo Hong. Take care friend. Of the KTA or the Korea TKD MDK Assoc? Wasn't Gen. Choi the second president of the KTA? Hwang Kee indicates that Che Myung-sin was the first KTA president. Choi was second. Ro was third. As I said at her presentation today, my goal when I grow up is to be Ms. Howard. At my age of 42 Ms. Howard at 76 can do many things I still strive to achieve. It is my honor to know her, train with her and to be her friend. Thank you Ms. Howard for your inspiration!!! Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2006 17:49:13 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray: I did some brief research and here is what I found so far: General Choi Hong Hi was the Second President, appointed in 1960. It would appear that because of his military obligations, Choi only served until 1962, where Kang Ik Lee was appointed the Third President position, for a short period. Ro was the Fourth President. I am still researching and will responf further. Again, I stand to be corrected until I have researched further. Are there perhaps gaps left in the numbering sequence? Ray Dear Ray, Pretty much the Dan Bons are issued sequentially. At times I have had 5 or 6 people testing for Cho Dan in the same test. They usually are issued sequential numbers, according to when they began their training. I have heard that the KJN does keep a few spaces open at each Dan Testing for those who may have had to make up part of their test and finished later than the others. I do not know if a "block" of numbers are reserved. All of this is conjecture and heresay because I, of course do not have the rank that would put me in that realm. Also during the early 60's I have been told that when there was a Dan Shim Sa in Seoul there would be several hundred candidates lined up on the street leading to the Central Dojang. They would call names, people would do the physical test and oral test, and leave by a different exit. I was also told that the tests in those days were much less complicated and difficult than they are today, where written essays are required, more basics, more Ho Shin Sool, More onesteps and applications, more hyungs, and a deeper understanding of the art is required. My instructor who received his Cho Dan ranking in 1961 alludes to this quite often, when he has officiated at Dan Shim Sa in Region 10. I wish all of you success in finding your "roots" or in locating past instructors and their history, because it should be an important part of every martial artist to know his "lineage" and be able to share it with his/her students. I am very happy that the Moo Duk Kwan's history has been preserved for us for the past 61years. I am also thankful for the formation of the Hu Kyun In committee ("looking back people" or historians) to help maintain this tradition and keep it's history up to date for the future pratitioners.
