Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I certainly can see the value of a good pedigree. For one thing, it maintains the integrity of an art and preserves history well. Sometimes though, a firm notion of lineage prevents change. I wonder if a poomse such as 9th dan Ilyo with its two jumping side kicks has relevance today? Are we still jumping over horses in battle or do we use those techniques in sparring or in real battle? Wouldn't poomse that deal with a broken bottle or knives serve us better? I am not advocating frequent change because if that happens we'll have a hodge-podge nonsense art. Is it valuable to have as a sabunim, someone that was a national champion? Yes if they can teach you how they got there! I don't necessarily see a connection to the advanced skill of a sabunim and his ability to motivate and teach his skills to students. Of course his expertise doesn't limit him, but I've seen sabunims with average skills who were wonderful teachers. As a university professor, I can attest that there are many of my colleagues that have not written extensively in the field and who are inspiring teachers. So what does a student look for??? I guess you can start by looking at lineage and expertise but I would attend a few classes and observe to see if the teaching style works for you. I am saying clearly that lineage, expertise and teaching are highly valued things. Each wonderful, none necessarily interrelated and all serving different things. As a legislator, Abraham Lincoln was a great teacher. He once wrote to Stephen Douglas, " My dear Douglas: I apologize for having written you a long letter. You see, I didn't have time to write a short one". The best taekwondo instructor I ever had selected one thing a month from his black belts to improve. I had a terrible time mastering the spinning heel kick. All he had to tell me was to twist the ankle of my front leg in the direction I wished to turn before the kick . That with a little torque really helped. He never won a state championship but for me was a great teacher. Grand Master Richard Chun taught more about integrity in one hour than most teach in a year. However he was also a great champion, author and one of the greatest in the world. Sid ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. The URL for that is: http://www.americankaratesystem.org/punchline.html As you can imagine, they are getting a lot of email and phone calls, and they also have to coordinate the return of Ernie and Chuck's bodies from Germany, so they've got their hands full. He is a very quiet man who doesn't like to share too many things with anybody. His name is Frank Trojanowicz (I believe his DAN Number is #13333) I heard from someone that he trained under Hwang Kee KJN but I don't know how true that is. I also know at one point his school was under the World Tang Soo Do Association but I know that's not where he started. Does anyone on this list know anything about this school and where they moved the dojang to? I am going back there in a month for another week's stay. Thank you. In his acceptance speech, Choue said, "The committee's launch is belated, but I will do my utmost to bring about a brighter world by spreading our fair play campaign in an organized and systematic manner to all sectors of life in Korea, including sports circles." The Korean Fair Play Committee (KFPC) will become an ordinary member of the International Committee for Fair Play (ICFP). The ICFP, established in 1963, has its headquarters in Paris, France. The international organization awards World Fair Play Prizes annually to athletes, persons or organizations for their acts or sports career promoting fair play. The ICFP aims for the worldwide defense and promotion of fair play with national and international organizations working for sport and education, high-level athletes, children, adolescents and those in charge of training them - coaches and trainers. The WTF is an ordinary member of the ICFP. The ICFP voted Iranian Hadi Saei Bonehkohal, the gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, as the World Fair Player of the Year 2005 for his humanitarian efforts. The ICFP has Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch, former IOC president, and IOC President Jacques Rogge as its honorary presidents. Prior to his nomination as the first president of the KFPC, WTF President Choue delivered a keynote speech under the topic "Olympism and Fair Play" before some 250 participants, mostly members of the Korean Olympic Academy, during the 2nd Korean Olympic Academy Congress at the Olympic Parktel in Seoul. Among the participants were Mr. Jung-kil Kim, president of the Korean Olympic Committee; Mr. Seh-jik Park, former president of the Organizing Committee for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games; and Mr. Dai-soon Lee, president of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation. A special demonstration of electronic protectors was conducted for participants. As part of its efforts to ensure fair judging and refereeing at taekwondo competitions, the WTF is pushing for the introduction of a new electronic protector system. --__--__-- Message: 10 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2006 19:24:37 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Penn vs. Hughes Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ltbm83WKJA Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
