I started in Moo Duk Kwan in 1964. My instructor was Richard Chun who then was a third dan. His skill level was nothing short of amazing. The original group that he promoted to first dan were astounding to be sure. It took us five years to reach first dan and we never knew when the next dan test would come. We knew only that Master Chun would tell us six months in advance so that we could brush up. The arts have grown enormously since then and as you would expect, many people got dans that would never have made red belt in those days. But for someone that hasn't trained in a long time, to suddenly test for 3rd dan is pushing it quite a bit I should think. While I don't think a return to white belt is called for...I would think that 6-12 months of reorientation is called for. But remember this is a business and the tough standards of yesterday will not cut it today. Sid ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. I have read Sid's message and I have to agree with him 100%. It is not the color of belt around your waist that matters but what we teach and learn within our martial arts style that matters the most. There are younger kids (I'm 41 closing on 42) that does many thing better than I in our dojang, does this mean I need to promote them to higher belt, I don't think any instructors will agree with that. Martial arts are physical and mental improvements, not one or the other (that's why some young child getting promoted to higher dan level bothers me a lot). I want to share an example I have experienced, it's about a gentleman who walked into my dojang awhile back and earned my respect and became a good friend. He is a Medical Doctor and has PhD in a science field, he has earned 3rd Dan in martial arts that is not affiliated with my martial arts styles (although they are very similar). We sat down and talked for awhile and he wanted to train at my school, I mentioned that respect to my school and my arts, he will be required to wear a white belt, in return, respect to him and his art that I will observe him and promote him accordingly. He responded by saying that's how he would wanted and would not expect anything else (what a refreshing comment), I had many black belts walked into my dojang and did not returned because of my requirements. Within 6 month, I put a black belt around his waist (he still had to learn our curriculum and are in process) it was a honor to that, he had earned a life time respect from me and other students by demonstrating a lot more than his techniques (his techniques are very good and we share many ideas). If I may suggest to the gentleman, please find a good school and train under a qualified instructor for 9-12 months as Sid suggested and get yourself ready physically and mentally before seeking to test for higher level, I guarantee, you will benefit more from it. I want to add that I am not against self training, I had to self train myself many occasions due my obligations in the military, but whenever I can, I seeked a qualified instructors and came back home to my teachers and retrained (you be amazed some of the bad habits you pick up without knowing it). Good luck and God Bless! His forward and back stances are not proper. Other than that, it looked pretty good. I think the stance thing is how the ITF perform them. It could be their way of doing it.
