Tkd as I can be split into 4 quarters 1.sparring (which of course can be competitive) 2.breaking (which of course can be competitive) 3.self-defence 4. patterns (which of course can be competitive) Note that 3 out of for sections can be competitive apart from self-defence. I would also say that many people who studies MA would say that self defence is the most important part, however some people seem to want to neglect it in the name of sport. >From a completely bias view I would encourage you to study tkd as an art because that way it will be still of value when ones physical prowess diminishes. It's both, a sport and a method of self defense (depending on how the self defense is trained) Much like boxing is a sport but can also be trained as an effective method of self defense. Is is a sport or a form of self-defense? I haven't trained in about a year and have recently moved about half-way between Cumming and Buford, GA. I'm looking to restart my training and need a new school. I'm curious if anyone has a recommendation for a school or club in my area. I'd prefer an adults only class in a preferably a non-commercial type of setting. I have to train at night due to family and work commitments. I'm more interested in a serious, martial arts type school as opposed to a sports based school." mc reply, Well if you desire WTF ranking and are OK with sport based, Master Brad Carter of Victory TKD in Buford Georgia would be my recommendation. However, for a more non-sport approach and non-commercial environment I would strongly recommend Master Mike Swinson. I will try to get his contact information from listmember Joe Clarke. If it does not have to be TKD and your open to TangSooDo then I would also recommend Joe Clarke's school, Pathway Martial Arts in downtown historic Buford area. I guess I should add if you're OK with a 30 minute drive through rural suburbia my school is in the Gold's Gym in Canton, Georgia. I hoped he had the cancer kicked. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit with him in CA and attend a class he was teaching for Black Belts at his school. My thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, and all those that have been influenced by his teachings for so many years. The Hapkido community is losing one of the great ones.
