(Craig Zeigler) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 08:27:37 -0800 (PST) From: Luther Veuleman To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Those Martial Art Tutor Sites Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Digest, I always run across video's like these, after doing too much google.com or youtube.com time. I'll see stuff and think, thats not how I've seen such and such do it or explain it. But then again, I've been to these Mississippi seminars, and worked out with some fine folks who seemed to know what they were doing. The problem comes from the other 99% of the non-hapkido world, who hasn't been to seminars and picked up some good techniques/habits from guys and gals like yourself. The only way to combat this, is to attempt to educate the world, that other 99%, which is very difficult. One way is writing books, one is teaching firsthand and keeping a HEAVY thumb on who gets to teach your art for you, and then there is what these guys have attempted to do, which is video thier stuff. As perfectionist as most of us are, or try to be, doing the books and videos have got to be a huge task. I'm sure Alain Burresse and Rick Clark have redone shots and techniques while filming/photographing many times, to make sure they put the best possible stuff out there. So what about you guys, like Micheal, or anybody else for that matter, doing a shoot? It can be simple. I know camera's and the equipment are expensive, but think back to all the stuff you've seen on these video sites. Some of the stuff that is pretty decent technique, or exciting to watch at least, comes off a digital camera that has a video function. It's a little grainy, but you can see whats going on pretty well. They've got video camera's at Wal-Mart for like 200 bucks. Somebody has a buddy thats got a camera. So get your stuff on film, and put it out there for us to see. I would love to see clips of stuff that I know would work, instead of some of these jokers doing the same ol wrist twist and calling themselves Hapkido blackbelts. In my VERY VERY VERY limited Hapkido knowlege, I know better, but I'm just one guy. Just like everyone on this list who knows better. We're just the 1%'ers. Its up to you actual Hapkido guys to do the mission work, and spread the good word (technique/art) that you all got from your instructors. As we unfortunatly loose these older masters, you guys are their stamps on the world, the martial arts communities. Step Up! If anybody took this post as me being an ass, it really wasn't meant that way. I'm actually excited and hopeful, as I know we have people here who might take the challenge of making their art in more of the public eye. West, Jere, Holcombe Thomas and the rest of the crew up in Mississippi. That way people get a chance to learn and practice some good Hapkido from people that not only have been around the block a few times but actually own real estate on the block!!! Have fun up there and uhhhhhhhhh it was 36 degrees this morning in Daytona Beach!!! The only response I could come up with it 'only if I have to'. To MA is the art of self defense, and the only way to win a fight is to avoid it in the first place. Sometimes thats not always possible, so I will defend myself to the best of my abilities. When asked that question by my instructor, I take it a little differently. Just because someone can spar fairly well, has good for and good technique against a bag, how will that person deal with actually getting punched without gloves or pads? This is an important question, and one that is hard to test without spilling a little blood. I have used my training a couple times, and am very ashamed of the one that comes to mind... *warning! short story* I was at a pub with some friends, and it is a place I like to go to on occasion. Normally it is a higher class establishment, and a bar fight is very uncommon there. the owner is a friend of mine. Anyway, one night a man who was very drunk, stumbled into me. This wasn't my fault, but I apologized, and tried to get on my way. The man seemed to take offense, and made several derogatory comments. I didn't respond, and didn't want a confrontation, but he simply wouldn't stop... I asked him to leave my friends and I alone, but he refused. When he took a swing at me, I hurt him badly because he kept swinging. He ended up going to the hospital, and I ended up talking with the police. They didn't arrest me because I was defending myself, but to this day, I think about that, and wonder what I could have done differently. Bar fights to me are by far the worst thing a martial artist can get into. Back to your question. It all depends on who is asking if you can fight, and what their intent it...
