There's been some great posts on this topic -- very thoughtful! Craig Stovall's point about overintellectualizing the difference between mind and body was a great one, and I'm definitely going to try to remember that. Thanks! Michael Tomlinson wrote that: "in my studies I have found that people are either logic centered or feeling centered." Yep, I would agree with that. And I can certainly see the potential benefits of feeling/emotional based life. There are certainly moments where one has to go with the emotions, although I didn't figure that out until I had kids. Life is just a lot more fun that way! I call my school "Playful Tiger" because I want to have fun during the training, but I also want to fight the way tigers play -- that feeling of joy seems to increase my speed and increase my ability to improvise. It was also a great name when I was teaching kid's tkd, and it tends to drive away the potential students with bad attitudes. :) Jye says he doesn't think there is good or bad ki, just human intent. I think that's right, but I'm a historian, so I have spent a lot of time reading about all the awful things in the past (wars, holocaust, etc.) and so I'm pretty cynical (probably TOO cynical). Again, having kids helped me get over that a bit! :) Michael ended with: "everyone believes what they believe and as long as they don't use it to hurt anyone or anything it's all good in my book." That's the secret I guess -- don't get so convinced your way is the best that you try to impose it on others. Great way to wrap up the conversation! I can't tell you about the weather there, but as far as the Hapkido portion goes, an old friend once told me, before my first Jackson event, to "Go Wit Da Flo". Maybe pick up one of those cheesy books that have basic phrases, like, 'where's the bathroom' or 'how do I get to'.
