This allows them to fight less experienced students and are given an edge. If I hadn't seen that I would not have believed it. Why not avoid all the trouble and just buy the trophy!!! Every time I think I've seen the worst I'm never surprised to find someone doing something even more awful. Sid

Philippe Villanueva, 35, who coached Pan American Games-calibre athletes and was part owner of Bluewater Taekwondo, showed no emotion during his sentencing yesterday in a London court for sexual exploitation involving one of his star students. Villanueva handed his trench coat to family and kissed them goodbye before being led from the courtroom. Superior Court Justice Peter Hockin tacked on another 18 months of probation to the jail sentence and ordered he obtain counselling for "sexual immaturity." He rejected defence lawyer Aaron Prevost's request for a six-month conditional sentence and said the case, which he called "a teacher relationship," required incarceration. In a quiet voice, Villanueva, a slight man with a shaved head, told Hockin "there was no intent to hurt anyone." "She was my friend," he said. "I'm ashamed it happened." Villanueva was charged after the discovery of a long sexual relationship with a girl that started when she was 14. She'd been one of Villanueva's star students and travelled with him to competitions across Canada. She first met him at age 12. The relationship was discovered in early 2005 by his business partner, who stumbled upon some photographs of Villanueva and the girl engaged in sexual activities. Police later recovered hundreds of photographs of the instructor and his student. Villanueva insisted it was a love relationship. He had no criminal record, but was charged with breaching his bail after he was caught with the girl in his car after his release. He served three months in jail. Arguing for a conditional sentence, with his client to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet, Prevost told Hockin Villanueva, who has been working at Formet Industries, has already been punished for the relationship. Villanueva was under the media's microscope and lost his business. He was suspended from provincial and national taekwondo associations. He eventually resigned. "Mr. Villanueva, as a result of his actions, has paid a very heavy price," Prevost said. But assistant Crown attorney Peter Rollings disagreed and asked for a three-year prison sentence. The victim, he said, "has been abused and used by a male adult who is obviously aware of the power imbalance." Since Villanueva was charged, Rollings noted Parliament has placed a minimum sentence on sexual exploitation and done away with conditional sentences. Hockin heard from London psychotherapist Len Kushnier who said Villanueva was a low risk to reoffend if he agrees to counselling and therapy. In a report for the court, Kushnier said Villanueva understands his criminal misconduct, but needs therapy to help him understand the inequity of the relationship. His relationship choices are "more about access and opportunity than compatibility." Hockin noted Villanueva is in another relationship with a woman who has two children. Hockin ordered he give a DNA sample and not associate with the girl, now 18, or her family. The victim, her identity court-protected, wasn't in the court, but her father was. Outside the court, he said his daughter is doing well. "We're OK," he said. "And we're going to be better now." --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2007 09:51:44 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: Belt cutting From: MasterPerry@nptatkd.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net This seems to be a wide spread problem across the country. The sad truth is that with less integrity being put forth in open tournament events, students have a better chance at a fair competition in closed tournament events such as those held by organizations like the American Taekwondo Association and the National Progressive Taekwondo Association to name a few. These events are at least monitored through association policy and help prevent this type of fraud. Here is what happened. Last Wednesday night I one of our new white belt students (who by the way does not have a uniform yet and was just wearing workout cloths), was having trouble keeping his hands out of his pockets. The second or third time I asked him to take them out of his pocket I gave him a couple of quick light kicks to the stomach while repeating myself, more messing around than serious. Nothing hard at all, really just reinforcement about why a person might not want there hands in their pockets in the middle of a martial arts class. Today, the father comes into class before it starts and tells me that his son said I kicked him for having his hands in the pockets and wanted to know if that was true. So, I said yes in fact it was true and that it was certainly not done in a malicious way but as a way to help get my point across. We had a little discussion about the whole thing and in the end the father's point was that he thought I was a bully and that he did not think my method of teaching was a very good way to teach kids respect which was why he signed his kid up in the first place. I then gave him a few thoughts from my perpective: that it is not respectful to put your hands in your pockets when you are supposed to be lining up to work with a partner and that it is a martial arts class and in fact what we do kick and punch in class. All that said, I didn't see the what happend as a big deal at all until the father came in. So the question is who thinks I was out of line and need to change my evil ways and who agrees with me? --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2007: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
