USA Taekwondo has named Master Joon Pyo Choi of Columbus, Ohio, Master Hong Kong Kim of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Board of Directors Member Mark Biviano of Cazenovia, New York, to work together on these initiatives. Masters Choi and Kim have been named as Co-Chairmen of this Task Force. Other appointments to the Task Force will be announced over the coming year. "Masters Choi and Kim will be instrumental in reaching out to the Grandmasters and Taekwondo pioneers who first established our predecessor organization, USTU," said USA Taekwondo CEO David Askinas. "I will be working closely with them to create a plan to further develop the martial arts aspect of Taekwondo within our organization, and will be utilizing their great talent and experience to better refine our Poomse (forms) instruction and competitions. It is no secret that our organization has concentrated on its primary task of developing Olympic champions in sports Taekwondo. Yet we have recognized that many Taekwondo practitioners in America do not compete in sparring and are very much interested in the more traditional areas of Taekwondo. We need to do much more to explore and develop some of the more traditional aspects of our ancient discipline." "When Korean masters first immigrated to this country in the 1950s and 1960s, they came to teach Taekwondo as a dynamic means to forge human character, especially for the children, to make them strong and wise," said Master Choi. "They hoped the virtues of the art would be embraced by their new country, and they have been. We are so proud that the USA has achieved prominence in Olympic Taekwondo competition. The goal of this Task Force is to make Taekwondo stronger than ever as a healthy activity to nurture character development in our youth, as a vehicle for our athletes to excel on the Olympic stage, and as a common ground to build international relationships in the era of diversity." "The integration of Taekwondo into mainstream American culture has spanned more than five decades and faced many challenges," added Master Kim. "Now is the time to reconcile the differences of the past and work together in the new millennium to preserve the history of Taekwondo in the United States for the benefit of our children. We want to build bridges within the national and international Taekwondo communities that make it easier than ever for all to participate and contribute to our Taekwondo initiative." --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "ISA Headquarters" To: Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2007 09:40:22 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Hickory, NC Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net For all those within a 200 mile radius of Hickory, NC, we cordially invite you to the 1st Annual Hickory Hapkido event. My instructor put the smack down on us. Basically, we did pushups, punching and blocking drills, back to pushups, then more punching and blocking, needless to say our arms felt like they couldn't take anymore, and this was all without break, then the next thing we had to do was very very very slow kicks, picking the leg up and waiting to extend it ever so slow. The way he went about it was subtle at first but by the end of the class I KNEW the message, and it was clear...."THIS IS MY HOUSE, DON'T EVER COME AND DISRESPECT IT" We never had another problem with horseplay. jye Jeff Yeagley wrote: Sid wrote: "Should we enforce disciple...YES!!!!! But let's do it by example, by making the WHOLE class do push-ups and thanking the errant child." One problem with this method of discipline is that some kids don't care if they make the whole class do pushups. It's not like the military where they comply because they know they'll get a fragging later in the barracks by all the guys they made do pushups.
