Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Esteemed Members: I have been reading the various posts with much interest on methods employed by others and am confused by something. Everyone professes some sort of progressive method that works for them, and I suppose that this might be OK, but with much chagrin I have not seen a post that states"I teach as I was taught to teach". When I studied to be(more like an apprenticed) Kyo Sa, I was taught how the federation I belong to wants the students taught whether for basics or discipline. I managed all sorts of situations while learning to teach under the close guidance of a Master Instructor, being given instruction as needed to handle any type of situation that might arise in the Dojang. After a long while(EE Dan and up in the org I belong to) I was asked to test for Kyo Sa. Even then the test participants were given hypothetical situations wherein one must manage a disciplinary problem of some sort in front of a panel of Masters, along with all the other questions regarding hyung, ho sin sul, etc. including demonstraion. I would suppose that it would be right and good if all orgs had a training program of some sort so that we all teach the same art the same way. Not bashing anyone, but I am truly thankful for the opportunity to belong to a traditional organization. I am trying to find coaching info with maybe step-by-step instructions, etc for a research project. Also interseted in any websites showing any flying or jumping kicks. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Jye has extolled the virtues of the Spartans and somehow construes that they serve as an exemplar of teaching methods in the martial arts: >What's interesting is that the historians said male children were taken from the mothers at 7 and put through grueling military type training. They were taught to not cry, would get whipped to see who'd drop first and things of that nature. So by the time they were around 18 or so (if they survived the training) they would join the military. So basically they were killing machines raised from babies...and just think, parents get made if you yell at their kids...lol. I will readily admit that this is a great way to create killing machines. I would hope that we don't want to do that. The Spartans were, first of all, conquerors, and the great majority of those who lived in Sparta had no say in the government. Most were helots (slaves) and were treated with great cruelty. If you were not in favor of slavery in the U.S., then you probably would be opposed to the Spartan methods as well. The worst of the whippings that Spartan children endured was a whipping on the altar of Artemis, and many children died (ie. proved themselves unworthy) during that whipping. Spartan children were encouraged to steal, and were given insufficient amounts of food so that only the clever thieves would be able to survive. If Jye meant that the Spartans should simply excuse our own shortcomings, then why stop there? The Nazis killed millions of innocent people, so I guess that Jye would also argue that Nazi atrocities can excuse our own. Harden up, argues Jye. The world is a harsh place and we need to be harsher. Our position as the world's greatest military and economic power should not make us question ourselves. Now is the perfect opportunity to kill all those who oppose us, and to hear the lamentation of their women. One note though... I do hope that everyone who espouses this view is white and male, or you may be very sorry later. Why does everyone who admires tyrannical overlords assume that they will be in the ruling class? I'm sure we'll hear more on the glories of Sparta with the release of "300." But don't argue on the basis of a comic book, ok? Go read your Thucydides. Sorry to be so harsh Jye, but you hit several of my buttons with this post. Does anybody know where I can find an updated one?
