He knew his material well, and froze up completely. He was a student that cross trained into our school, meaning he started elsewhere. When I talked to his parents about the test they informed me that our testing surprised him at having an audience and so many people around. I was told their tests were always done one on one with the instructor, no one around, and very secretive. Parents were not allowed to watch. That seemed a bit odd to me as anywhere I have been testing has always been an open, come see type of thing. An opportunity for the youth to show off what cool things they have learned type of thing. It has me now wondering, how do you all do your testing? We do ours with an invite to test (ltr stating they are ready) for youth this needs to be signed by teacher and parents, (adults signed by themselves); testing a week or two after the invite (date is on it and is a Saturday), then the following Monday we give belts and certificates, and evaluation form (points and comments from judging panel). We use the week-end to review the taping of the test for evaluation purposes. Test itself consists of forms, one steps, sparring, self defense, breaking, and Q&A. From the schools I've been around, this didn't seem that out of the ordinary. How does our school look to you all on testing. Our we strange and out there? Yes, I realize I'm opening the door to lots of critique, but I am very curious at the different testing now that I see how different this student's expectations were from my sense of reality. Every time you mention him, you validate him and you give him ammunition to say "these guys are just jealous". You are empowering him basically. Short story is that unless you can really nail him to the wall, you should not even mention him. I'd consider this guy like Valdemort from Harry Potter... you know, he who's name cannot be spoken. Thoughts? ~f. --__--__-- Message: 3 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Hackworth To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2007 16:29:38 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > I'm thinking that we should just ignore this guy. If we don't bring his continued scams to light he'll just fool more people and take more of their $. Letting others know of him and his actions in no way validates him or empowers him. Might he attempt to use it that way? Sure, that is just the type of person he is. But I suspect and hope that most with half a brain will see thru it, as most did when he first came onto the scene. We -did- nail him to the wall. Now we need to keep him there. imho Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Thomas Gordon" To: Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Testing Procedures Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2007 19:38:04 -0500 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. Pritchett, We do testing very similar to what you describe. I've always been a bit suspicious of private testings. For us, low belts on Tuesday, high belts on Thursday, and Promotions on Friday followed by a covered dish social. Great time for the families, students, and instructors to meet and mingle. Candidly, I'm surprised how big the covered dish has gotten and it's been great for the school. Also do a group shot on Friday and generally get an article in the local newspaper. Was perhaps the student primarily taking private lessons before? If the classes were group classes then I'd expect the tests to be group tests. But not sure how people might structure tests if all they did were private lessons.
