Family and friends are encouraged to attend (minors are very encouraged). Before the testing beings, the audience is instructed as to their expected conduct. The idea is for them to watch and enjoy, not to cheer. Any spectator who does not follow these guidelines is asked to leave. Cheering sections are distracting not only to their student, but everyone else around, including the instructors. We do not video take the tests, and ask that no cameras be used. The judges panel normally consists of 3 black belts who grade according to a sheet. The instructor running the test doesn't normally add input, their job is to administer the tests, and keep things moving along. During my 1st Dan test, there were three of us testing, and that was run much the same way. The main difference was that we were the only ones testing. Black belt tests in our school were rare. I took me 5 years to get mine, and that was after never failing a test. For the black belt tests, spectators were not unwelcome but due to the obvious stress of that kind of test, they were not encouraged to attend. Black belt tests were much longer than normal ones for obvious reasons, and there were few breaks. Normally a black belt test lasts 3-4 hours, and we finish up with brick breaking outside (they tend to create a bit of a mess). I know I'm rambling, but I hope someone finds this at least mildly interesting :) -Craig --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Donald" To: "dojang_digest" Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2007 13:02:43 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] testing procedures Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Our dojang uses open testing- the actual testing procedures are similar to most of what has been posted. To help the students, young and old deal with the pressures, we stress it as a 'promotional review', iea demo rather than an outright test. After all, the instructors have watched each student's progress since their first white belt class. In the event of a emotional or mental lapse, or a failure to complete a break, the student has to bring the board to class and eventually do the break in front of the class, or successfully perform the 'forgotten' form or technique before receiving their new rank. In an effort to calm 'game-day' jitters, we do an announced 'pre-test' for the gup ranks about 1-1/2 weeks ahead of test day. The students are called up in groups by rank and run through their paces just like the real deal. This is a final opportunity for them to show the instructors they are ready to test. The students are then called individually up to the head table [ parents with their kids], and told what things they need to polish/work on leading up to testing, then given a 'test paper' . They fill out the usual name, address, rank testing for, time in rank, date they began training, number of classes - total and since last testing, belt size, favorite technique, etc., along with the test fee schedule, and the scoring portion for the head instructor's use during the actual testing. Hope this helps. pil seung, Don Ross --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2007 18:21:26 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Having observed first hand To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net hey imagine, if they rigged the treadmills to generate electricity as people used them, and the electricity was sent to some 'storage' place...that human hamster wheel thing would really have purpose...lol. just messing around it's been awhile, school has been occupying alot of my time, and I hurt my knee. I think I over extended it? is that even possible? all I know is is hurts right where they hit you to check for reflexes. Jye Craig Zeigler wrote: To a point, I agree with you. the only thing that comes to mind when I see people lined up on the treadmills watching the tube is a human version of the hamster wheel. Gyms do have their uses, but it isn't nearly as much fun as being on the mat. Consider Denis Leary's comments on gyms. --------------------------------- Expecting? It's just that all I ever hear are things this guy is doing but never anything that indicates that we were successful. You have to keep in mind, that I personally ate some crow on that deal and publicly exposed what was going on. I gained the respect of a lot of people, and not that that is not enough, I'd like to think that eating that nasty crow did some good. I'm sure you understand. I just don't want to be perceived as having sour grapes or simply being malicious, because I don't fall in either category. By the same token, I just don't want the crowd here, which I am honored to be a part of, gives any credence to him. I don't want to do or say anything that validates him, his organization or those that associate with him. Thanks for clearing it up for me Ray. ~f. --__--__-- Message: 5 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Fair enough To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2007 19:53:53 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Thanks for the information. I know that many contributed to the facts coming to light. And I know that you were a big part of the problem for a very long time. I'm not exactly sure how you helped or even if you helped, but -you- were helped by the efforts of others.
