And I know that you were a big part of the problem for a very long time. I'm not exactly sure how you helped or even if you helped, but -you- were helped by the efforts of others.>> Yes, I was because I foolishly believe the same crap that a lot of other people believed. As to whether or not it helped? I can name five schools that left as a direct result of my actions. Further, I was the one primarily responsible for the removal of the TKDT article as Carol Hart recognized me as a staunch supporter of Hackworth. Then when everything happened, she specifically took my call and had me explain everything in detail. At the end of that conversation, she was quite angry and wanted to do an expose. Apparently that expose was nixed because they didn't want to cast more controversy on TKD. Feel free to ask her yourself. ~f. --__--__-- Message: 2 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Helped To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2007 11:03:57 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Feel free to ask her yourself. I know Carol, but I went to Greg Ryman. It was probably good that it was hit from several different angles. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Greetings all, We have one of our best instructors, a 5th dan, in charge of 2 schools, that seems to be derailed. He disregards the school rules and just walks out onto the floor, street shoes and all, no bow, no recognition of where he is, nothing. He wore street clothes to the last two testings and rushed through his portion of the test in order to leave early. He has returned to college and is learning the trade of private investigation during the day and at night, he teaches a class that is growing smaller and smaller. He just turned 40, is divorced but on good terms with his "ex". The last time I attended one of his classes, about three weeks ago, he leaned against the mirrors and told us of his "glory days" and his former instructors and their exploits. He has left early, before the last class is over quite a few times in the last month and has even cancelled some classes so he could leave the school earlier. Now, before you get your brows too wrinkled, he is a good man. We have all held him in the highest regard for many years. He has shared custody of his kids and is a good father to them and the kids of his girlfriend. I've seen this on many occasions in their home. He is generally good natured and fun to work out with. We tease him that he is a 13 year old in a 40 year old's body. In all, a great guy. The recent behavior has many of the seniors in his schools worried. They have come to me with complaints. Mostly, the lack of one of our tenants: integrity. I want to save him. I want to save him from further embarrassment. I want him to save himself. My best guess is a compilation of influences. I think turning 40 hit him hard. As I said he's a 13 year old in a 40 year old body (we joke about it) -he is a normal adult in all areas. He could be going through a mid-life crisis. He is starting a new phase in his life, private investigation classes at the local college. The class schedule could be crowding his life too much to the point that he can't get enough rest. It could be a money issue. Bills may be piling up and he feels frustrated or trapped. There could be something in his personal life; a close relative that is deathly ill, his relationship with his girlfriend may be pressing him to commitment when all these other things may be pressing him at the same time. He may be in financial or legal trouble that he won't want public. Yet it drives him to distraction. I don't know. Do any of you, in your vast experiences, have any ideas? Have you seen this before? I will be trying to talk to him this evening. The trouble is, as you can see, he is hard to "corner". Gordon Okerstrom --__--__-- Message: 4 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Burn out? To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: Victor.E.Dodge@jci.com Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2007 14:51:30 -0500 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Greetings to you too, Mr. Okerstrom, WOW! You can speculate all you want about the possible causes of this individuals behavior, only he can tell you what is going on. I can't imagine what would cause someone, who has worked so hard for so many years to attain 5th dan, to just throw it away. Because that is what he is doing. The behavior you have described goes against ALL five tenets of TKD: Courtesy - To the students, other instructors, the school, the flags Integrity - To hold yourself to the same standards you teach your students Perseverance - To keep trying no matter how bad the situation Self Control - Do not lose yourself to anger, sadness, hate, self-pity or pride Indomitable Spirit - To never give up on others or yourself, knowing that you can overcome adversity or at least face it head on The first rule of instructor training was to leave our personal problems outside the dojang. When you enter, you must have a single focused mind set; the class. Such a person should not be teaching, IMO. Further, unless his behavior changes, his status as 5th dan should be suspended. He should be advised that whatever help he needs to deal with his problem will be made available to him, but his behavior in the school in front of the students in inexcusable and cannot continue. Furthermore, he owes many people an apology for behavior that is unbecoming a black belt. I hope that you are able to reach this person and give him the help/guidance he needs to get back on track. I know you've been tied up with alot of stuff on the homefront and such, so just wanted to let you know I hope to see you around this part of the world soon. You've gotta miss our mosquitoes, eh? For all you Digesters out there, just to prove its a small world...I am in clinicals right now for RN licensure, and I was doing rounds the other day with a hospice nurse out in East Texas. We got to talking a bit, and she mentioned she was a TKD student, along with her husband, so that sprang up alot of conversation. At some point, I mentioned 'this email list' I belong to, and she said "Are you on the Dojang Digest too?!" and I said absolutly not, those guys are a bunch of misfits! Just kidding, I told her I'd been a member for a while, and it was a good group of folks to learn from. I also encouraged her to head east to Jackson MS, and to get her instructor involved as well. FWIW After revitalizing the struggling Ultimate Fighting Championship, and as a result lifting the sport of mixed martial arts world wide, Lorenzo Fertitta, a Station Casinos magnate alongside his older brother Frank, confirmed the purchase of the PRIDE Fighting Championships from Dream Stage Entertainment Tuesday in Tokyo. DSE and PRIDE CEO Nobuyuki Sakaibara also announced that as part of the agreement he would resign effective April 8, following PRIDE 34 at the Saitama Super Arena. Joined by UFC president Dana White and the company's matchmaker Joe Silva at the Roppongi Hills Arena, Fertitta discussed the creation of a mixed martial arts commission for which he would act as president. PRIDE will run autonomously under the umbrella of Zuffa, which the Feritta brothers and Dana White created in 2000 when they purchased the UFC. "We have been talking to Pride for probably about 11 months," said Lorenzo Fertitta, according to an Associated Press report. "It's been a long, drawn out process but we finally we were able to put the two brands together." Fertitta spoke of making mixed martial art equivalent to global sports such as baseball and soccer. "This is really going to change the face of MMA," Fertitta said. "Literally creating a sport that could be as big around the world as soccer. I liken it somewhat to when the NFC and AFC came together to create the NFL." The NFL's Super Bowl came as a result of the NFC-AFC merger, and Fertitta envisions "Super Bowl" type cards between UFC and PRIDE fighters, including Randy Couture (Pictures), Tim Sylvia (Pictures), Chuck Liddell (Pictures), Matt Hughes (Pictures), Diego Sanchez (Pictures), B.J. Penn (Pictures) facing PRIDE stars such as Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures), Wanderlei Silva (Pictures), Mauricio Rua (Pictures), Dan Henderson (Pictures), Shinya Aoki (Pictures), Tatsuya Kawajiri (Pictures), Takanori Gomi (Pictures) and Hayato Sakurai (Pictures). "We will be able to literally put on the fights that everyone wants to see," the former Nevada State Athletic Commission member said. "It will allow us to put on some of the biggest fights ever." UFC president Dana White made curt statements, suggesting other MMA promoters pale in comparison to what Zufffa now offers with UFC and PRIDE, as well as the much smaller WEC, under its umbrella. The aggressive UFC boss received a warm reaction before discussing potential dream fights between the organizations' champions and stars. One of those men is Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, who was responsible for the first real battle won between Zuffa and DSE when he defected to the American company earlier this year. During a taped message to the nearly 1,000 fans in attendance, the 2006 PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix champion said he wanted to come back to PRIDE and get a second crack at PRIDE champion Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures), widely regarded as the world's best heavyweight. But before "Cro Cop" and Fedor face one another again, the first in-ring clash following the merger will feature Jeff Monson (Pictures) against Kazuyuki Fujita (Pictures), who step into the PRIDE ring on April 8. --__--__-- Message: 8 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Ray - Man To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2007 20:57:22 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Hey man, just thinking, haven't seen you around in a while. I had a somewhat similar encounter when returning from one of GM West's big goat-roping events. I walked up to the United counter at the New Orleans airport for my return flight home. The United gentleman at the desk looked at my ID, looked at me, and looked at my ID again. He asked if I was Ray of the_dojang and was I returning from Jackson. !!! He was a member of the list.
