A while back, at the request of Dr. Kimm, myself and several members of the the United States Korean Martial Arts Federation became correspondents for Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine . I wanted to write a series of articles about some of the "true" HapKido Masters teaching in the United States. My first (and last) idea submitted to TKD Times was a story about GM West. Being a friend and student of GM West for over twenty years, I thought I was well qualified to write an article about his military and martial arts background. Without going into too much detail the editor of TKD Times told me they were not looking for articles dealing with this kind of subject matter. It was suggested to me that I write articles with "human interest" story lines. Stories about how martial arts had impacted and changed peoples lives. The example given to me was a story about someone who prevented a bank robbery using their TKD skills. My reply was great Masters impact and change lives on a daily basis. I decided then I most likely would not be writing any articles for TKD Times. Yoon, a native of Closter, N.J., and a black belt in Taekwondo, most recently served as Sports Performance Coach at Velocity Sports Performance in Mahwah, N.J. He also spent five years with USA Boxing, serving as Resident Boxing Program Coordinator in Marquette, Mich., from 1999-2002, and as Events and Program Coordinator in Colorado Springs from 1997-1999. Yoon was team manager for a number of USA Boxing events, including the 2005 Under-19 World Championships in Jeju, South Korea. "I am thrilled to be a part of the great family at USA Taekwondo," Yoon said. "I look forward to working with our talented National Team coaches and passionate membership in the common pursuit of elevating the level of excellence of Taekwondo in the U.S." A certified strength and conditioning specialist, Yoon is a graduate of the University of Colorado and earned his master's degree in experimental psychology at Northern Michigan University. The athletes under his supervision as Resident Boxing Program Coordinator accounted for one-third of the 2000 U.S. Olympic boxing team and half of the medal count for the U.S. during the Sydney Games. "We are pleased to welcome Eddie into the USAT family," said USA Taekwondo CEO David Askinas. "We decided that we wanted someone with a sports science background that had NGB experience. His focus will be to enhance existing programs for the benefit of our membership while at the same time helping to create new programs. We look for him to work closely with HLTC on our high level training programs while looking to see how we can provide services to our membership at the grass roots level." In addition to Yoon's hiring, USAT also announced that Meredith Miller is moving from the Events department to assist Yoon as National Teams Manager. Miller joined USAT in 2005 as Regional Events Manager. "Meredith has a demonstrable passion for the performance/National Teams side of the business since she came on board with USAT," Askinas said. "She was a high level athlete (collegiate goalkeeper) at the University of Louisville and relates well to the issue surrounding National Team needs and enhanced athletic performance. She will handle all of the National Team duties including team travel to international events, apparel, equipment, National Teams communication and coordination with National Team coaching staff. In addition to these duties she will work with Eddie in the high performance national programs area. "This reorganization/reallocation of duties will better enable us to deliver the kind of improved programming that will benefit all USAT members," added Askinas. "The Events staff has started a search for Meredith's replacement and we are confident that we will have a capable replacement in house in May." --__--__-- Message: 12 Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2007 14:14:49 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Chang Young Shil Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >From Cumberland Maryland Times-News Grandmaster Chang Young-Shil from the South Korean Hapkido Headquarters visited the Western Maryland Hapkido Academy in Frostburg this week. About 300 I'd venture to guess. Being on the far northwest corner (panhandle), I'm about 10-12 hours from Miami. If Bradenton isn't too far out of the way, Mr. DaCruz is an excellent instructor. He's also an ITF fourth degree. I traveled with Grand Master Hwang to his school a few years ago and he insisted I stay at his home. Very gracious man and solid technique. Since he is of Brazilian decent, he also teaches Capoeira. I only have his cell number so contact me off list if you'd like more information. tgordon@gordonmartialarts.com Thomas Gordon Florida --__--__-- Message: 15 Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2007 20:43:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] have to admit Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have to admit I liked the following video clip. So I thought that maybe we could start something here similar to the concept of open source in IT. For those that may not know, open source is basically when the source code of a program or application is free to the public. For instance and operating system such as linux is open source. So people can develop for the operating source freely and it stays free. So in the spirit of open source stuff from IT, I was thinking, we could use that basic concept where everyone can have a hand in it if they choose, we could start our own KMA magazine. Everyone on this list has at least one special talent that they could share with the project. So what do you all think? Oh buy the way, it could be completely digital.
