It was very >professional and informative, and I know that I took away at least one >insight into how to improve one of my techniques from watching it. The video isn't meant as a learning tool, at least not as a tool to learn new techniques from. We use it for our students, so they know which name belongs to which technique. And to get an idea which techniques they need to know for their next belt. The video is accompanied by a 160+ page pdf http://www.hapkido.nl/docs/cmk-examen-alles.pdf which is still regularly updated. >Strange, I've always been taught to take it a step further with Dee Nak Bup >- not just extending the legs back, but throwing them over one shoulder or >the other so that you come out of the fall standing in stance. I thought >Hapkido did it the same way, but I guess they don't. We would call that one the back roll (it is also on the video). Sometimes you see a back fall where people leave their foot on the ground. So they end up flat on their back, legs bend. I have seen this in many Judo school and in some hapkido schools as well. >Well, according to Wikipedia, the founder of Hankido (Myung Jae Nam) was a >Hapkido master who learned aikido and blended the two styles to create >Hankido in the early 1980's. How much aikido Myung Jae Nam studied, will probably always be a point of discussion. For some time during the 70's Myung Jae Nam was the president of the Korean Aikikai, and I have pictures of Myung Jae Nam meeting Kisshomaru Ueshiba. The official story is: Myung Jae Nam was inspired by aikido. The similarities between hankido and aikido are numerous, but so are the differences. >Yu, Won, Hwa is also a huge part of Kuk Sool Won, though my training so far >hasn't exposed me to techniques like Jeon Hwan Bup, Young Nyu Bup, and Shim >Hwa Bup. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them demonstrated ni the video, >however, and have half a mind to incorporate them into my workout routine at >home. The principles of Won, Hwa and Yu are found in just about every hapkido-style. However the way they are interpreted can differ a lot. Shameless plug here. If you are interested in hankido, there are two DVD's available from www.sangmookwan.com Put together by my teacher, Ko Baek Yong, who was a student of Myung Jae Nam. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.sangmookwan.com/ --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2007 07:39:49 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Asian Taekwondo Union Inks Pact Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Asian Taekwondo Union Inks Pact on Taekwondo Promotion with Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam 26 Apr 2007 The Asian Taekwondo Union has signed a memorandum of understanding on taekwondo promotion with three Southeast Asian countries – Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. In a tour of the three countries between April 15 and April 21, 2007, Mr. Dai-soon Lee, president of the Asian Taekwondo Union, signed the MOU on taekwondo promotion, under the sponsorship of Booyoung Co. Booyoung began sponsoring the ATU's taekwondo support program for Asian countries in 2006. "Our support program will greatly help consolidate taekwondo's position in Asia and will be of much help to those countries which require financial support," said ATU President Lee. On April 16, Mr. Lee, who also serves as vice president of the World Taekwondo Federation, met with Mr. Dang Quoc Tien, president of the Vietnam Taekwondo Association, to sign the agreement at the Phu Tho Indoor Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Also at hand at the signing ceremony were Mr. Kyu-seok Lee, vice president of the ATU and Executive Council member of the WTF; Mr. Ki-cheol Choi, secretary general of the ATU; and Mr. Truong Ngoc De, vice president and secretary general of the Vietnam Taekwondo Association. Under the agreement, the ATU will invite an 18-member Vietnamese national taekwondo delegation to Korea for two months of intensive training. On April 18, Mr. Lee of the ATU inked a similar agreement with Mr. Hem Samnang, new president of the Cambodian Taekwondo Federation. According to the pact, the ATU, under the sponsorship of Booyoung, will invite a 10-member Cambodian national taekwondo team to Korea for a two-month intensive training, while dispatching 10 Korean university students majoring in taekwondo to Cambodia for one month during the summer vacation. On April 20, the ATU leaders visited Vientiane, Laos, to ink a similar agreement with Pol. Gen. Vilay Douanmany, president of the Lao Taekwondo Federation. The pact calls the ATU's invitation of a 10-member Lao national taekwondo delegation to Korea and a dispatch of 10 Korean university students to Laos. --__--__-- Message: 3 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: Victor.E.Dodge@jci.com Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2007 16:01:27 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] TKD tournaments Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Greetings to all, I just wanted to touch on a previous topic concerning entering tournaments at a lower belt level, discussions related to cutting weight for the weigh in and putting off belt testing/advancement while continuing to train/compete at a lower belt level. All of these things I felt to be "bending the rules" in order to gain an advantage. After a recent tournament experience, I gained a new insight that has caused me to reevaluate my opinion. I sparred against an opponent who was in my age group, weight class and one belt level below me. He was the better fighter and I was not upset by my loss to him. He displayed a calm demeanor and excellant control of his kicks. I was impressed by his level of control at his belt level. I later learned that this individual had studied kick boxing for several years before joining TKD. I know of other students in our school that have studied judo, karate, and other styles of TKD before joining our school as white belts. How would you balance the competition knowing that one opponent has more years of MA experience although not in the current area of study?
