Trees have been planted in Israel to celebrate his life and to mark his passing. Michael A. Assuming we're talking about cutting for a fight, then here's an excellent article by Martin Rooney. He's very respected in the strength & conditioning field as it pertains to martial arts and other sports, and I pretty much agree 100% with what he's saying. I'd start there for sure. http://www.grapplearts.com/How-to-Cut-Weight.html As far as my personal situation, I was at 187-190 about 6 weeks ago, and I got up this morning at 173 not feeling dry at all. I have to weigh in on the same day of the fight (weigh at 6pm, fights start at 8pm) so if I'm not at 170-171 by next Friday night I'll probably take a mild laxative that night and restrict my intake the following day to easily get the 2-4 pounds off. My approach is very simple...I get all the sugar and starches out of my diet, and up the cardio. The diet part is hard to do when you're a typical carb craving American like me, but those are the breaks. No soda is the hardest part for me since I was raised on Coca-cola, but after about 3-4 weeks I don't miss them anymore. I'll take a sip here and there just to remember what they taste like. Another good, basic approach is to up the protein and restrict the calories. Here lately my typical day has been a couple of scrambled eggs in the morning, a grilled chicken breast and small side of veggies for lunch, and then something sensible for dinner. Usually a bowl of oatmeal, chicken or beef and I try not to have anything in my mouth after 7 or 8. If I absolutely have to snack or go crazy I'll settle for an apple, orange, or banana. They're loaded with nutrition and don't stick to you the same way a granola bar or potato chips will. Oh yeah...bread is the devil...none of that, either. The workouts are critical...if it makes you sweat it will take off the weight. I just can't get out there and run for 3-5 miles like some people, and that's not optimal for a power-endurance sport like MMA anyways. So, a lot of my workouts are geared toward basically busting my @$$ for 20 to 40 minutes. I do a lot of bag work, kicks on the shield, sprint intervals, grappling intervals, bodyweight exercises, etc. This is all common sense to the nth degree, but I say it to make one point. It's all about discipline. It's easy to miss workouts when you have a wife and kids to spend time with, and there's 150 channels of satellite TV calling your name. It's easy to put junk food in your mouth when you're tired and hungry. It's easy to eat pizza and burgers as opposed to spending the time putting together a healthy meal. It's easy to go take up golf and ride around in a cart, as opposed to going down to the MMA gym rolling around with a bunch of sweaty guys with ringworm. It's hard to do what's HARD. People are AMAZED at how much weight I've lost. To me, it's no big deal because I know guys who've taken off 20 pounds in 2 weeks (not healthy, but can be done). I've done it the right way (for me at least), and I honestly don't think I've lost much muscle mass at all. You can talk all day about diet, exercise, and laxatives...but the real secret is discipline, will power, and desire. The diet and exercise are just tools...the mind is what takes off the weight. These are the broad strokes...feel free to ask any more questions. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello All, This summer, in an effort to maintain interest in and recruit new students to our "Y" TKD program, I and my fellow instructors would like to offer a series of "Day Camps", 2 days a week for 4 weeks. We would like some / any appropriate input for 3 - 7 graders. A "Stranger Danger" session is on our list but the day camps will only last about 5 hours a day.
