The decision Monday night by arbitrator Larry Saichek of Miami upheld a decision last month to remove Meloon, 26, from the team in the wake of a dispute with USA Taekwondo and with her longtime coach Jean Lopez, the older brother of two-time Olympic gold medalist Steven Lopez and a national team coach. Meloon, who won a bronze medal at the 2005 world championships and has won more than two dozen gold medals in national and international competitions, did not return telephone calls Tuesday seeking comment on the decision. In a message on her MySpace page, she said: "USA Olympic tkd (taekwondo) is a joke." In an interview last week, she said she requested arbitration as a result of a continuing series of disputes with Jean Lopez and with USA Taekwondo, the sport's national governing body. The most recent falling out, she said, led to her decision to stop training with the Lopez family at their Sugar Land gym. The federation, in turn, said Meloon was not training properly and replaced her on the world team with Charlotte Craig of Murrietta, Calif., who was second to Meloon at the qualifying event in March in Dallas. Meloon lodged complaints with the federation and with the U.S. Olympic Committee regarding Jean Lopez's conduct and asked the arbitrator to reinstate her on the world team. She also said she failed to receive proper medical treatment after suffering an injury during the Dallas tournament. A woman who identified herself as a spokeswoman for Meloon, who continues to receive financial support from USA Taekwondo, said Meloon would continue to pursue her complaint against Lopez and the federation. Jean Lopez was training with the team in Macau for the Beijing event, which begins this week, and was not available for comment on the ruling. But David Askinas, USA Taekwondo's chief executive office, said Meloon had committed multiple violations of the federation's code of conduct and that the federation would not continue to tolerate her behavior. "We are sorry for the innocent people hurt by her actions," Askinas said. "We were forced to act to protect other team members. It's a sad case." Five Houston athletes will compete as part of the world team — the three younger Lopez siblings, Mark, Diana and Steven, all of Sugar Land, who are defending world champions; and former Houstonians Simona Hradil and 2004 Olympic silver medalist Nia Abdallah, who train in California. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Joseph Cheavens" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Arbitrator rules taekwondo star can't join U.S. team Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 08:48:37 -0500 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I'd be interested in knowing what this dispute is between her and the Lopez's. Nothing has changed since the last time we posted over it but I will try to add some more detailed information. BBB policy is at https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx and more defined at https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/cag.asp So, if you've bought a service (whether it be training or certification), BBB WILL handle it. At least, they’re supposed to. With that said, in some ways, BBB is powerless. For reputable company, any complaint is taken seriously. If BBB doesn’t work and there is a legitimate complaint, take it court. The courts almost always lean towards the consumer. Over regulation in so many ways. For one, I have city, county, and state licenses that are required in order for a company to legally open their doors for business. These licenses are supposedly to assure the consumer that a company is legitimate. We also have a competency license. Not really sure what that’s for...other that I’m required to have it. When I asked the lady at the tax office, she didn't know either. So she asked her supervisor - they didn't know either. And these are people supported by our government (aka "us") making 80-150% of the median income for our area with a great medical benefit package, retirement plan, and every legal holiday off with pay. *sigh* So it's a taxation without logical representation. Yeah, I paid it because I wanted to open a martial art school. For our employees, we have an occupational license. This means we’re legally allowed to hire someone. Of course, all of this means taxes such as tangible, intangible, matching social security, matching medicare, property tax, 941, and 940. And, since all of this is written by politicians, I need an accountant to tell me how much (and when) to pay. Anyone in business knows a decent accountant is expensive. This expense is directly because of governmental regulation and because they hire windbags to write bloated laws that is still up for interpretation. Before I can get a mortgage, I have to have proof of insurance for building, parking lot, and contents for wind, fire, and theft. Before they’ll issue that, the insurance company wants proof of the specialty insurance coverage for our students. And if I do any renovations, I’m supposed to get a building permit so the city can come out and make sure I hired licensed workers (who’ve done all the above for their industry). If it reaches a certain dollar amount ($5K in my area), I’m required to go to the courthouse and file a notice of commencement…..which has to be notarized. What most people don’t know, in most areas, any building permit is immediately received by the property appraiser so they can increase the value of your property and therefore you get to pay more next year for property taxes. And, since a building permit means you’re spending money, ADA (American Disabilities Act) requires that you spend a portion to assure the building is accessible for handicap people. ADA is another argument all unto itself. If I rent, I get to pay the CAM fees which covers all of that plus parking lot maintenance, signage maintenance. So yes, I think we’re way over regulated in several different venues. And the final result is the business goes under or the consumer pays more to support our governmental machine.
