In my experience, being able to improvise is a way of life...lol. I used to work for a technical agency that would send us out to various industries to deal with their IT problems. Well one day I got a call to go out to a bank and hook up their teller system and stuff. Now I told my people that I've never worked on a teller system before, and they said they were in a bind; the previous engineer disconnected and reconnected the equipment and left without having the people test it. So I go to the bank. I look at their setup and I think to myself, oh *%$! what did I get myself into?!?!? lol. Well, not knowing jack about their setup I did the one thing I knew and could implement; documentation. I started documenting the way things were layed out and physically setup. From doing that, I noticed certain things weren't connected. The only thing from my training I could actually implement was connecting the PC portion of the teller system up. So the next thing I did was I had to improvise, I had to learn how this stuff worked on the fly so to make a long story short, I was able to get them up and running by thinking on my feet, most of the stuff I was taught was for the most part out the window because it dealt with things that didn't pertain to their setup/system. So with all that said, in my opinion, it should be a teacher's hope that a pupil can take what is learned and begin to attempt to implement those things in some way so they can make them work for them, but to also be able to improvise, think on their feet, let a technique evolve.
