Sure Korea had its own martial arts with a profound, ancient, and beautiful history. However the General was the one who used the term first. So far I have not seen a WTF version of the history of TKD that tells me anything different. Ko Eui-min, chairman of the World Taekwondo Federation Technical Committee, said, ``China is doubted to have been adopting its Northeast Asia Project in taekwondo.'' Northeast Asia Project is an attempt to distort ancient Korean history in the northeastern territory of what is now China, including the Koguryo Kingdom (37 B.C.-A.D. 668) and the Palhae Kingdom (698-926). ``I was really upset to hear that the broadcaster at Changping Stadium in Beijing said taekwondo is a Chinese martial art, during the 2007 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Championships,'' he said. On the first day of the biennial competition, he introduced taekwondo, saying, ``Taekwondo originated from Korea, combining Japanese and Chinese martial arts.''(emphasis added) So, is China trying to lay claim to the BS 2,000 year old history of TKD by claiming Koguryo was a Chinese kingdom, or is the bolded statement the extent to which the Chinese are claiming a part of TKD's origins. If its the former, then that is just plain silly - like arguing that Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny is really Chinese. If its the latter, then I don't really see what the fuss is. Is Ko, and the WTF by extension, denying TKD's roots in Karate and the influence of CMA on TKD? In the 70's and 80's, there was another style called that, as well, founded by a Dr. Joon Ho Seuk. They billed themselves as "the unified martial art." Their syllabus looked like a combination of judo/yudo and tae kwon do, with different hyung. My understanding is that when the group mentioned in the link you provided discovered there was another WHD (of more recent origin) they told them they couldn't use that name. I believe there was some discussions regarding joining forces, but eventually the newer group changed their name to Tong-Il Moo-Do (http://tongilmoodo.com/) Have a great day. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Joe: GM Ko, Eui-Min was my master instructor while in Korea (71-73) and he has been very instrumental in the spreading of TKD around the world. Now living in Germany he is the Chairman of the WTF Technical Committee. Few people alive in the world today have the background or the years of total dedication to TKD and thus qualified to make the objections to the comments made by China as GM Ko. Ko is simply saying that TKD in its present form is Korean. No one that has even an elementary knowledge of TKD can deny the influence that other countries have had on the art. There is one thing for sure, TKD wasn't developed in China and so China doesn't deserve much more than and honorable mention in that regard. I agree with GM Ko's point.
