Anyways when you are a 1st GUP and are nearing your 1st Dan test you become a "Black Belt Candidate" and wear a blue belt and a dobak with blue trim around the lapel and bottom of the dobak top.  I'm sure this was initiated by GM Shim as I understand he was MDK. So here I was at a Korean-run TKD tournament back in Feb. '87 wearing my Black Belt Candidate dobak preparing myself to compete in the Advanced GUP division.  All of a sudden this Korean master, name unknown, looks at me and says "Hey, we need you over here in this ring to judge!"  I look over my shoulder at my instructor and he gives me the "Why not?" look with his hands up by his shoulders.   So, off I go to the ring I was told to report to to judge my very first tournament as a 1st Gup/Black Belt Candidate!  I was the only non-Black Belt judging in that huge tournament but the only ones that knew it were me, my instructor, and the students from my school.  By wearing that dobak with the trim I was looked at as a Dan holder amongst all those Korean masters, who by the way are in the majority MDK. Thought I'd share my experience with the blue trim....:) James Morgan GTKDA Lewisburg, WV --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Curt McCauley" To: Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2007 09:19:57 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] MDK Do Bahk Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In addition to JC submission in regard to the Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Uniform: Traditional Blue Trim and Belt was initiated in 1954 by Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim. Designed after very old traditional Korean Apparel. There is a photo of a Museum display of these clothes in several of his publications. Do Bahk means apparel of the "way". Referring to the teaching of Lao Tzu or No La as I believe the Korean language dictates. Blue is a Yin or Um color signifying passivity. Which would work with the slogan or saying " Neh Gong Weh Yu" which translates as,"Strong/hard on the inside-soft/mild on the outside". Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim's strong hope was that somehow mankind would find a way to world peace. When Grandmaster Hwang Kee would attend any function in those early days, he would always have blue trim. I am not with an organization at this time, but for me, there is no other way. The spirit of the Moo Duk Kwan must live on, no matter what politics say. This has to be the standard for TSD. Liked the concept, but it sure was difficult to locate midnight blue belts in the days before the mega martial arts supply stores and the Internet. It was from these uniforms that Hwang Kee got the idea, so the story goes. It has also been said that he got the idea from the martial arts uniforms that were used in China.
