My Jui-Jitsu Instructor Rener Gracie flew in to Longview, Texas and taught the Gracie Combative course at my school. This is the course that the Gracie Academy teaches to the US Army. We had an amazing turn out. Local new papers, and TV stations covered the event. Once all was done, and certificates were passed out for participation. Rener Gracie excepted our school as an official Gracie Jui-Jitsu representative for Texas. We are a Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan School certified by the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Fed. Inc. and we teach traditional Soo Bahk Do and have any intentions of changing that. I believe it is one of the best ran organizations in the world and my dedication to the art of Soo Bahk Do has not changed, however in 1992 I began to cross train in small circle jui-jitsu under a student of Pro. Wally Jay. He was from Hawaii and had moved to Texas after his service in the Navy. After 7 years of cross training my jui-Jitsu instructor left Texas and moved to Cali. Then in 2000 He and I reconnected and he was with some other organization. I continued to train with him when I could but distance made it difficult. In 2005 He awarded me my Black Belt. Because of all the uncertainty around him and his rank I never felt good about my rank and its legitimacy. So I sought out the best in the world in my opinion in Jui-Jitsu. I went to visit the Gracie Jui-Jitsu Academy in Torrance, California. I took private lessons there with Rener, Ralek, Rorion, Ryron, and Reylan Gracie. I told him about my past with Jui-Jitsu and my continued dedication to the Moo Duk Kwan. He agreed to help me. About 3 months later I spent 30 hours on the mat with him learning the G.R.A.P.L.E. program (Gracie resisting attack prcedures for law enforcement) I also began to teach the Gracie way using their curriculum. After some continued training under the Gracie Family he visited our school. This past week-end I was officially promoted by the Gracie Family and our school was excepted as a Gracie Jui-Jitsu School. Rener actually placed the new Gracie Triangle decal on the school window. We now offer Traditional Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan and Gracie Jui-Jitsu and have the official backing from both the Moo Duk Kwan and the Gracie Family. I guess the moral of this is to always seek to teach and represent with legitimacy. JC _________________________________________________________________ Like puzzles? Also, when I started Tae Kwon Do in 1982, we only had five belt colors total - white, yellow, brown and black - so from my perspective, brown has always been in the schema. I have always seen the multiple colored belts as being a relatively recent development in TKD - one which I somewhat associate with the development of McDojang geared towards making $$$ off of belt tests. I may be wrong in this last point, but its just that I only started to see the multi hued belts at the same time that TKD dojang started sprouting at strip malls like mushrooms after a rain. I had the pleasure of meeting Hwang Kee when he was in New York for a visit. Both GRandmaster Hwang and Master Chun wore black trim at the time. I never heard of blue until I read it hear on the digest. I have seen it since at another dojang. My pet peeve is when I see a Korean martial artist wearing a brown belt. That is strictly Japanese. My 2 cents anyway. Sid ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. The original colors for the gup belts were the same colors that you find in the Korean flag (T'ae Guk Ki). White, blue, red, black.
