For example, TKD, Aikido, etc.. > > Regards, > Doug M What are all the stripes for? In some classes I've seen, the stripes actually denote a different rank. In those cases, generally one stripe is all that happens. For example: 9th gup yellow belt, 8th gup yellow with a green stripe, 7th gup green belt, 6th gup green with a blue stripe, 5th gup blue belt, etc... In other classes, the stripes don't denote rank, but have different meanings such as time-in-grade/attendance, or different sections of the curriciulum learned, etc. For that, I've often seen many more stripes per belt. Why do you wear stripes on your belt? Many schools don't use stripes at all. There isn't a "usual number," though it is unfortunately true that a number of schools who use many stripes per belt rank then add many _fees_ per stripe, and tend to be McDojang-ish. As such, many people hear about a large number of stripes, and think "McDojang." This is not universally true, however. Thomas H. hapkido.4t.com No virus found in this outgoing message. I have a 31" waist and when I made 2nd dan my master gave me a size 7 belt. It wrapped nearly three times. But back in the day when I started, the master would post all the test grades. If you passed ( and in those days about 1 in 5 failed in color belt testing) you went out and bought your own belt. Of course in 1964 I remember paying 80 cents for my green belt! The more I think of it, when you consider how horribly out of shape so many kids are today, I think I'll stop worrying about the belt colors, the Karate thing and just be grateful that more kids are training. To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Same here. My former school did their ranking the same way. white high white (yellow stripe) the only belt colors that used multiple stripes were red belt and black belts. Our red belt with 1 stripe was high red, with 2 was recommended black then the next belt was black. Now with all this talk about belts to show rank, I'm wondering how you all may feel about patches to denote rank? Personally, I like a plain uniform with maybe 1 or two patches, but I've been in a school where you get a new patche for reaching certain ranks. Wasn't crazy about that. Any thoughts? Jye "J. I'm sure everyone has heard it if you've participated in competitions before: No sex before a fight or while in training. Is this a real thing or just a myth? Does it really make you weak and if so why? is there factual evidence? Jye i've heard this, too, jye. its based on nietzsche philosophy, jung and freudian psychology. its the idea of libido. jung sees it as a psychic energy and desire. there is a theory that one only has so much of this psychic energy to devote to any one activity. we commonly associate libido with sexual activity. however, if one uses all this energy on one activity, he will not have any energy left for other activities which require a great deal of energy. so...if you go screwing around the night before a fight, youre going to spend all your libido/energy on that and be too drained to fight well. take care, melinda :) Melinda Kidder, Owner Chajonshim Martial Arts & Supply Supply: _www.cjmas.com_ (http://www.cjmas.com/) 1.877.847.4072 School: _www.cjmaa.com_ (http://www.cjmaa.com/) 1.573.445.6636 ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2007: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
