Personally, I see the "PC" label as a defense of social injustice. It is an excuse that because certain groups in the U.S. have power, they can say what they like, even if it hurts others. Again, the slave-owners in the Old South had the same idea. They were in charge, so obviously they were superior and those "po' ol' darkies" just couldn't get along without their help. There's a PBS special on living history called "The Manor House" that folks should watch. People are assigned roles in the house and asked to roleplay those roles (butler, maid, lord, lady, spinster aunt, tutor, etc). It is astonishing how arrogant the "lord" becomes and how oblivious he is to the change. It feels very natural to be in charge. I love when the Jamaican visitor tries to burst his bubble, and the "lord" doesn't even notice. Hilarious, and sad at the same time! Many people argue that New Yorkers "call a spade a spade" and that this is an example of equality or democracy. If everyone is at the same social status, that could work, but when there is a power difference between two people, the powerful one will feel justified and the one without power will feel abused. When I talked with my son about all of this, I asked him "What is it called when a person with power insults a person without power?" His reply? "A bully." Right on the money! As martial artists, I think we need to avoid being bullies. Joe asked: Do you think I should inform the local "Oriental Modeling Studio and Massage Parlor" that they are not using a PC term for their bordello? ;-) My Reply: Of course not, their whole aim is social injustice. A bordello automatically implies a difference in power and the othering of East Asian prostitutes gives customers a feeling of power. Check out this paper by Nadine Wu -- http://www.jmu.edu/writeon/documents/2004/wu.pdf . It brings us full circle and connects Orientalism, human trafficking, and the new global slave market. There's some good books out there on the subject too -- try Philippa Levine's Prostitution, Race, and Politics (2003). Sorry I got so serious -- I've just read some stuff on prostitution in Okinawa, and seen similar set-ups in Toronto, so I don't think it's funny any more. AOMA is one of the best schools for "Traditional Chinese Medicine" in the country. I think organizations like AOMA or the NAACP keep terms in their titles which have fallen out of favor because they don't want to lose brand recognition . Besides, new stationary and letterhead is expensive. Regards, Don "It's not how many times we fail but how many times we get up after failing that define us." All of which has kept my interest and admiration in those men that perfected combat science and martial movements. It's now time for a uniquely American approach to martial arts. I'm not refering to MMAr of which I'm?a big fan. Asian poomsae are based on swords, fans and movements and artifacts found in Asia. We have different needs and challenges. I'm hoping to one day see an art, of which I'd love to be part of, that makes movements and forms that deal with defending against street attacks, simpler kicks and more difficult hand technique and emphasizes American upper body strength and height. The one person I respect most in this regard is Grandmaster George Petrotta?who has been thinking along these lines for many years. I'd love some feedback on this. Wouldn't it also be great not to send our money abroad and keep it here with American masters that don't limit Americans in their growth and advancement???? Feedback would be greatly appreciated. The seminar, led by Grandmaster Shi Jin Yong, will take place Wednesday, July 11 at the McEnery Convention Center, from 5-7 p.m. The fee is $45.00 for USAT members and $75.00 for non-members. Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the seminar. Grandmaster Shi is a Ninth Degree Certified Black Belt, Kukkiwon, World Taekwondo Federation who has been teaching Taekwondo and swordsmanship in the United States for over 26 years. Grandmaster Shi travels to Korea several times annually to update himself with the official changes to Taekwondo forms which he then brings back to the U.S. competitors via his forms training seminars. A resident of the State of Illinois, Grandmaster Shi previously conducted official Olympic training at all of the U.S. Taekwondo Union training seminars held regionally throughout the United States. The specific training was done in conjunction with a worldwide effort between the World Taekwondo Federation, the USTU, and National Taekwondo organizations of other countries to standardize Taekwondo competition forms. Grandmaster Shi is sought out by local area Masters as well as students and Masters in other locations as they prepare for advanced promotion testing. "Whether you want to compete at the upcoming Poomsae Team Trials in Las Vegas or just want to perform Poomsae better, this seminar is essential for the poomsae practitioner or instructor," says USA Taekwondo CEO David Askinas. "We are pleased to bring an instructor the quality of Grandmaster Shi to San Jose as a service to our members. USAT's new Martial Arts Commission, ably chaired by Grandmasters JP Choi and Hong Kong Kim, are committed to offering new and exciting martial arts programs for our members." --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Michael Munyon To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: Americankwando Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2007 12:43:01 -0700 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Sir, I've trained in American Kenpo.  Yes, GM Ed Parker did learn originally Chinese Kenpo, but modified it greatly to meet the needs that you're talking about.  I recommend checking out an American Kenpo school.  I would additionally recommend organizations such as IKKA, AKKA and Kenpo 2000.
