After all, Goju Ryu is technically an American art. However, I'm not so much interested in modifications as I am about something uniquely American without obvious Asian modifications, without the obligatory Asian references and movements. I think a good parallel is that Krav Maga is uniquely Israeli as Sambo is uniquely Russian as boxing is American. I have been up stairs in the founders office and trained on the floor under HC Hwang Kwang jang nim. I also trained there under another Korean Master that I do not remember his name, and I taught a class of my students approx. 8 on that floor the last time to Seoul. I was staying at the Kaya Hotel with in walking distance of the do-jang. It is a humble place, but the air is intense. Very good points! Sid wrote: It's now time for a uniquely American approach to martial arts. I'm not refering to MMAr of which I'm?a big fan. STUFF DELETED....Wouldn't it also be great not to send our money abroad and keep it here with American masters that don't limit Americans in their growth and advancement???? My reply: There's lot of people who have done this and are doing this. Danzan-ryu jujutsu is the oldest one still around, but certainly Americans have been crosstraining and developing their arts for a long time. Question though: why do we want an art that depends upon strength and height? One of my instructors used to train people to fight weaker people who didn't know what they were doing. He didn't phrase it that naturally, but certainly that was his plan or perhaps his excuse. Shouldn't we train to fight larger people who know what they are doing? And if someone can show me that, I really don't care if they are Asian, American or Martian; I'm going to learn it. As for the money, well, I'll pay if the training is worth it, but after the first twenty years, shouldn't we be discovering things on our own? It has been my dream for some time that the way martial arts are learned could change. I remember watching two guys in the weight room one day, and one guy asked the other how he got such good definition on his triceps. Guy number 2 told him, guy number 1 said thanks, and that was it. Wouldn't that be cool if we could do that in the arts? It's a nice dream, anyways. With only 40 years (or more) of study and practice how could we ever expect to reach the same level of understanding that has been achieved by someone who was able to study for a few years and reach the level of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd dan in Japanese Karate and develop it into a unique American martial art? We never had a king that we could claim that our great grandfather protected in his royal court! Gosh how could we ever hope to reach the same level! On a serious note I don't think that Poomsae/Hyung/Kata/forms are based on swords or any other weapon. I think they were all against an individual that did not have a weapon in hand. I think that back in the "old days" a warrior would have met a weapon with a weapon in combat. Warriors would not have been anywhere without a weapon of some sort within hands reach. Sure there may have been a time when they may have had their weapon broken or knocked out of hand and they may have had to use empty hand techniques but I suspect that would have been a last ditch effort on their part. Who in their right mind would face a sword with empty hand if they had a sword or any other weapon at their disposal? Rick Clark www.ao-denkou-kai.org From: tkdsid@aol.com [mailto:tkdsid@aol.com] I've read for over these last 43 years, about lineages, kwans and great Asian masters. All of which has kept my interest and admiration in those men that perfected combat science and martial movements. It's now time for a uniquely American approach to martial arts. I'm not refering to MMAr of which I'm?a big fan. Asian poomsae are based on swords, fans and movements and artifacts found in Asia. We have different needs and challenges. I'm hoping to one day see an art, of which I'd love to be part of, that makes movements and forms that deal with defending against street attacks, simpler kicks and more difficult hand technique and emphasizes American upper body strength and height. The one person I respect most in this regard is Grandmaster George Petrotta?who has been thinking along these lines for many years. I'd love some feedback on this. Wouldn't it also be great not to send our money abroad and keep it here with American masters that don't limit Americans in their growth and advancement???? Feedback would be greatly appreciated. US Taekwondo TAEKWONDO: July Athlete Profile - Kickin' It With...Christina Johnson (to view this athlete profile with photos, go to http://www.usa-taekwondo.us/624_1736.htm) Christina Johnson, 17, of Rockville, Md., will be the youngest member of the U.S. World University Games Team that will compete in Bangkok, Thailand, Aug. 8-18. She qualified for the team through the high school division, and is also a member of the last two U.S. Junior National Teams. Christina answered the following 10 questions for this month's USA Taekwondo Athlete Profile... Q1: During all the long hours of traveling, what do you do to pass your time? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: If I am traveling by myself, I mostly listen to music. If I am traveling with teammates, then it depends. For example, once we played charades in the back of my car. Sometimes we play cards. Other times we’ll watch movies. Q2: Do you have a pre-competition meal? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: I don’t have a specific meal before competition but I do prefer to have an equal amount of carbs and protein the night before a competition and also for breakfast. Q3: What is your favorite sports movie and why? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: I really liked Miracle and that was my favorite for a long time until Master Ramy recommended Million Dollar Baby. Both are very motivational. They make me want to get up and train right then and there. Q4: Do you have any pre-competition superstitions or rituals that you adhere to? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: I don’t have any superstitions but I do have certain clothes that I wear. I always wear Master Dring’s uniform top and Master Ramy’s WTM jacket. Q5: Who is a superhero you'd like to be, and why? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: I don’t know because I never paid very much attention to superheroes so I think I would have to make up one. Since all the superheroes have weaknesses, I would have to be a superhero without any weaknesses so I could never be defeated. Q6: What is your dream job? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: I think I’d have to separate “dream” from “job.” Being on the U.S. Olympic Team is my dream. After that, I would like to be a Taekwondo coach and own my own business, even if that business is not Taekwondo related. I want to be my own boss and make a lot of money so that I can still be part of Taekwondo. Q7: After a long, hard week of training, what do you do to reward yourself? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: My week never really ends because I train 7 days a week. Usually though, I will go out with friends to a movie or to the mall, sit home and play video games or relax with my family. Q8: Who is a teammate that has had an influence on you, and why? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: All of my WTM teammates have had an influence on me but if I had to choose one, then it would be Thomas Ly. We always seem to be motivated at the same times and when one of us is motivated and the other is not, we will motivate the other to do the drills we are supposed to do and push each other. One of the things I like about Thomas is his fighting style. I think that I am fighting a little like him these days and that’s a good thing because he is very talented. His speed is incredible. Amanda Thome and Brandi Powers are also a huge help in motivation. They are excellent training partners and they always keep me going. Amanda is always holding paddles for Brandi and me on Saturdays. Q9: What is your favorite kind of candy? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: Chocolate and Sour Patch Kids. My Granny always buys them for me. Q10: What is it like being the youngest member of the World University Games team? CHRISTINA JOHNSON: So far, just being able to say that I am the youngest team member is very cool. It shows my success at a young age and I hope this is a reflection of what is in store for me in the years to come. I feel like it’s a big accomplishment to make collegiate team by coming from the high school division. Even though I am the youngest team member, I don’t think that will affect my ability to gel with the rest of the team. I know so many of the team members and have traveled to competitions with most of them already. ### Author: Bill Kellick Organization: USA Taekwondo --__--__-- Message: 12 From: "Joseph Cheavens" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Royce roid positive Date: Tue, 03 Jul 2007 16:05:11 -0500 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net This is very sad, especially considering the anti-steroid position that the Gracies have always held. FWIW, according to a preliminary study by Aberdeen University, a combination of [legal] dietary supplements, such as Creatine and proteing shakes, combined with heavy exercize can cause elevated levels of Nandrolone. http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/nandrolone/nandc.htm http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/1013.htm Not sure if such a combo would explain Royce's test results, especially with the extremely high level found in his system, but its something to keep in mind. I'd really hate to find out that Royce really was doping.
