But what that instructor is able to impart to the students. Experience and wisdom. Time in grade is only a instrument we can use to determine ones seniority but not ones skill level. One of the things that always impressed me about Master West wasn't the fact that he could hurt people. But the fact that he did not have to, to teach us. And as long as we are going to use a ranking system we should embrace it and strive to set the best example that we can. Respectfully yours in Hapkido, James Allison --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Don Kirsch" To: "the_dojang" Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2007 18:57:01 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] the term "Master" & the DD Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Thomas, You are correct this topic as been discussed many times and my rank is referenced on my web page. I see nothing wrong with one having their rank displayed on web pages, advertisements or seminar flyers. In fact, I meant no disrespect towards any one wanting to be addressed by their rank. My point really had more to do with forums like the DD and informal situations outside the dojang. I view this as an informal place where people from varying styles with varying degrees of experience in their respective arts, can discuss topics on an informal basis. Much like when I'm out to dinner with friends who are students I wouldn't expect to be addressed formally. However, it was also an observation. Most of the people who I hold in high regard in the martial arts tend to believe they can study their art for the rest of their lives and they will still be working towards the goal of becoming a "Master".
