Every BB test is different and yet the same. If a test falls in January, for example, our running requirements may be different since it can be -20 (we are in central MN). The instructors usually find something creative for us to spend our time doing. We are on the second floor of the building. To get there you have to climb a set of about 30 steps. Every student in our school has run those steps hundreds of time by the time they reach their BB test. Our tests seem daunting at times but anyone who sets their mind to it can do it (our school motto). Our students from purple belt up are required to be there on the Friday night before the test. The BB who is testing must also attend at least three classes per week for the three months prior to the test. By the time you reach your BB test, you are in all probability ready. You are right, earning the BB is just the beginning. It sounds like you are in the same position I am in. I will turn 53 in a few months and will never have the same ability I once had. I fight with arthritis and torn tendons in my rotator cuff which limits my Hapkido. It is discouraging but what can we do? You also asked a good question. Just what is a BB? The vision that Grandmaster Hwang Kee had for the Moo Duk Kwan is being carried on through his son Grandmaster HC Hwang. I will be attending the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan National Tournament in San Diego at the end of August. Instructors and students from all 50 states will attend as well as some from other countries. So I can assure you the Moo Duk Kwan is not dead. The problem is that many instructors that broke away from Grandmaster Hwang Kee, still teach under the name Moo Duk Kwan (some TSD and some TKD) however they claim to be Moo Duk Kwan. They teach there own vision and have not evolved with the art being taught. They still teach the old techniques (Some have been modified) and hyungs are not (Yuk Ro Hyungs) They don't practice the new (Soo Bahk Do Basics) all of which Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim introduced while he was still alive. In the late 80's or early 90's the us federation voted to drop the name Tang Soo Do and use the name Soo Bahk Do in the U.S. as it had been being used in Korea since the 60's. The vote was to passed by the members of the Moo Duk Kwan. I personally voted. I remember a clinic where HC Hwang KJN said this change will more closely connect us to the Korean Soo Bahk Do Association and create more unity in the World Moo Duk Kwan as well as separate us from those that use the Tang Soo Do name with out Moo Duk Kwan affiliation. The further back in history they became disconnected the further away from the present Moo Duk Kwan training metheds and vision they are. That is not to say they are not great instructors, however unless they are training with the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Fed Inc. (if in the US) at a certified school under a certified instructor they are not going to be getting the new material. For example: The new basics were first introduced to me at my 2000 Ko Dan Ja Testing. Prior to that I had never seen some of those techniques and had cert. not practiced them as basic exersise. The Yuk Ro Hyungs were introduced a few years ago to the Ko Dan Ja and now are required for Cho Dan test. Today if a student uses a New basic in sparring they recieve 2 points in sted of 1 to encourage the uses of them. I still maintain that if you have a Moo Duk Kwan certificate of rank and it does not have Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim's signature or HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim's signature than it is from a school or organization that has broken from the Moo Duk Kwan and is not authorized to issue Moo Duk Kwan rank. If you have a legit certificate that is great, however the Moo Duk Kwan organization issues all certificates so if you are teaching Moo Duk Kwan and promoting students then the certificates you give out are not legit unless you are sending them through the US Soo Bahk Do Moo DUk Kwan Fed. Inc to be issued and signed by Grandmaster HC Hwang. This is not just my opinion, I believe it to be fact. I spent quite a bit of time with him yesterday and is happy to report that is in a lot of pain but is doing remarkably well. He is expected to be released by Friday, July 20. Then, he is facing at least 8 weeks of rehabilitation. Ian A. Cyrus, Headmaster IKMAF www.ikmaf.com Personally, I had my first "total hip" in 2000 on the right side. It took a year to get over that one. Then in 2004 I had my left hip done too. My rehab time was 3 weeks and it is doing well now. GrM. Ji will do well as long as he remembers that the new hip joint is smaller than his old one and if he is not careful, (until the muscles and ligaments, etc. reattach) he will have to limit some of his pivoting throws. I wish him well. Respectfully, George I.
