Guru DeBordes moves well for a big guy, and I bet he is very effective. I liked most of the talk, including his discussion of "taking one through the pain," which I guess wrestlers would call just "having some discipline." One problem I saw is when he says that "tigers don't survive in prison." The stuff he is teaching is great for fighting, but it is for one on one combat, not for self-defense in the U.S. Did you notice the hidden tiger claw weapon? At least he was doing his hand movements with a knife. After something like that they have to purify it again. That goal was to have been achieved three years ago, but proved more difficult than anticipated. The marine martial arts effort is a program of well, street fighting. The Martial Arts Training Program is taught like most other martial arts, allowing for degrees of proficiency, and colored belts to indicate how far a marine has gone from tan (the lowest level) to grey, green, brown and black (the highest.) The marine program is notable for elements that accurately represent actual combat conditions. For example, before doing the actual combat fighting, trainers wear the marines out with vigorous physical exercise. In combat you are likely to encounter the enemy face to face only after a lot of running around. Another realism element is the random introduction into the training area of items that could be used as weapons (a knife, pipe, piece of lumber). These realism touches make the Marine Corps Martial Arts Training Program popular and effective. The fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan has reinforced the importance of this program. So all marine infantry must achieve the green belt by the end of 2008. All combat support marines must get the grey belt by early 2009. The first (tan) belt only requires about 28 hours of training, but the others need more (from 47 to 72 hours for each level). And, you have to be in very good shape to even get started on the tan belt. But the skills obtained have proved to be lifesavers, especially in raids and search operations, where a nearby civilian often turns into an armed hostile on very short notice. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Michael Munyon To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Martial Arts for Marines Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2007 16:26:23 -0700 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good stuff! The Air Force is now teaching self-defense during BMT.  I'm sure it's pretty watered down, but at least it's a step in the right direction. The AF doesn't have any belts or things of that nature, but maybe in the coming years they might pick up on what the other branches of service are doing. Over the past decade folks like myself have been training organizations on an individual basis, but nothing as big as an AF wide program.  Many folks within the ITF and USTF have spent thier time training folks.  Some of the instructors were even appointed as the Armed Forces Director(s) for their organizations.  Very Respecfully, Michael Munyon On Tue Jul 24 14:56 , 'Thomas Gordon' sent: http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htinf/articles/20070723.aspx Now Mandatory For Marines To Master Martial Arts July 23, 2007: The U.S. Marine Corps now requires all its troops qualify for the lowest level belt (tan) of its six year old martial arts program. It is unfortunate that the saga has come at the expense of Malaysian taekwondo athletes' participation in the past few WTF-promoted championships, but we, at the WTF, welcome your athletes back. We wish to reiterate, since the first day of the deregistration of the Malaysia Taekwondo Association that the MTA is the only, full-fledged member of the World Taekwondo Federation in the territory of Malaysia, and is the only association that has the right to use the WTF name and emblem in the territory of Malaysia. In addition, we would like you to ensure that all representing athletes, officials and members are to be registered with and recognized by the Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA/WTF) at all material time. Please be reminded that we will not accept any other representatives from any other associations in your country. The name and emblem of the WTF are our intellectual properties, and member national associations have a duty to prevent the pirating of the WTF name and emblem in each country. Accordingly, the MTA has the right and authority to take appropriate legal action against such pirating by clubs, associations and persons in Malaysia. With that, the WTF welcomes back your association's active development of taekwondo in Malaysia. We look forward to your continued dedication in the coming years.
