Are they using shinken in the partner practice, or iaito? They say they are "real swords" but what does that mean? Partner practice with shinken is not a smart idea to me -- too many chances for a debilitating or even fatal injury for just sword practice. Master Seong says he practices Nakamura-ryu batto-do, but doesn't list any instruction in this on his website. Why? The two other interesting things for me were that his etiquette is much more like the Zen Nihon Iaido Renmei (All Japan Iaido Federation) than the iaido etiquette used by the Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei, with which he is affiliated. The other I'll just mention is that he doesn't keep a grip on his tsuka (handle), which my instructors would class as an error. Thanks for the vid! Seems like the Miletich Fighting System (MFS) guys have a very good record against pure BJJ fighters.>>> I'm pretty sure that's referring to an "in-house" challenge at the Torrance Academy (Rorion's place). I'm just wondering who the gatekeepers are? Rener and Ralek, maybe? I'd hate to have some kids barely out of their teenage years defending my hundred grand. They're tough as hell and their money would be safe from me...but it's a whole new world now. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Gladewater SooBahkDo" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2007 08:27:42 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Gracie's Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I agree with Jon here. The MFS, and someothers have beaten the Gracie's in Pro Sactioned events. and if you remember Matt Hughes and some other all practice BJJ/GJJ. with out it they mostly would have never came close. We saw that in the first several UFC matches. I also remember watching Renzo choke Pat Militch out in a match. The Gracie Challange was not for Pro Sanctioned Mixed Martial Arts fights. It was for those that still believe the style they practice in pure form is more effective than GJJ. In that situation your right you don't want to go to the ground. However fighting a gun or a gang is not practical and running to fight another day is most likely the best option. You take the best fighters like Randy Coture, Rampage Jackson or Chuck Lidell and put them in the cage with a guy and a gun or two guys even and that is silly weather on the ground or standing. As for Kung Fu, I respect the art form however It has been tried in the Octagon, and Royce broke Jason Deluca's arm. If you watch the Gracie in Action DVD the same fighter Jason Deluca a Kung Fu stylist in great shape took the Gracie Challange. He is now a Highlight real. Sifu bell is a student of sifu rudy's and both come from harlem. Sifu bell lives in one of the roughest projects in harlem so there's no doubt that his training has been tested. I used to run with blood brothers nation in connecticut and being able to fight on several levels was just a reality. The thing is being able to focus under immense pressure and stressful situations like gun fights and what not. The average person living in the burbs may not have to deal with that, but for those who live in some urban areas and definitely the ghetto that's just a way of life. I understand your point about kung fu in the UFC but I don't think we can see someone lose and discredit their system, alot is to be taken into consideration; are they training as realistic as possible, how dedicated are they? do they fully understand the fighting methods of their system. Also, we have to remember those competition matches have rules and regulations that dumb down traditional arts. Just think of this, has gracie been hit in the face? yes, I've seen his eye swollen, now what if that punch was an eye jab? would he have still won? possibly, maybe yes maybe no. hell, I've gotten a drop of sweat in my eye and that stopped me from doing what ever I was doing, I couldn't imagine a forceful eye jab. I shared a video clip of a hapkido guy going against a gracie on this list and the hapkido guy lost....3 times. so does that mean hapkido is inferior to bjj? I truly believe it's how you train, and how often you cross hands and how often you cross hands with people from other systems. just my opinion. The opening night there is a demo by all instructors and I'm proud to say that Alain's cane demo was by far the best presentation.? Later he taught a cane class with excerpts from his new cane DVD.? It was well-taught, well-received, and I survived (as his partner) due to his excellent control. Alain shared the outline of the DVD with me and it looks very comprehensive. ? You can check it out at his website: burrese.com. ~Sharon Tkach **************************** Thanks Sharon, It was great seeing you again as well as Thomas and Julie.? Thanks for the help during the cane class as well.? It is always nice when you have a mixed group to demonstrate on another hapkidoin. Yeah, that outline I had with me is the same one I use to teach all day cane classes if a group wants that, or I can fill as many hours as wanted and mix joint locks and other HKD to fill a day.? It just depends on what the group wants.? I used the same outline for filming with Paladin.? Each dvd is around 90 minutes, so that is around 3 hours of instruction, so when you give people time to practice, you can see how it can fill a whole day.? I was only able to touch on a small portion of it last weekend in Colorado. Again, it was great seeing you.? Looking forward to next time. Thanks!
