AAU Taekwondo offrs kukkiwon as well as their own black belt. Taekwondo Won also offers a similar program. This is vaguely reminiscent of the days when you got a school or Kwan dan and a kukkiwon dan. I never really understood the need for two dans at the same rank? You know me -- I have this knee jerk response when it comes to sword, because it is a weapon near and dear to my heart. Sorry if I came on too strong! I've studied a few sword styles at this point -- European fencing, Praying Mantis saber, Eskrima, Hoki-ryu iaido -- and for me there's three practice methods that appeal to me: 1. Sport competition (like dry fencing or kendo). 2. Theatrical sword (like Elizabethan). 3. Classical sword (like Hoki-ryu) The attraction of classical sword for me is not "training as they did in the 1600s," because of course that is not what we do. Even with the Japanese, who are ultra-conservative in preserving the art as closely to the original instruction, every generation will introduce some change, even without wanting to. Either the technique changes, or the reason for it, because every body is different. It certainly is closer than a lot of other styles, but what I primarily gain from studying that style is practice as moving meditation (the only kind of meditation I can put up with!), and a deep connection to traditional culture, which is highly rewarding. Part of getting a 5th dan in Hoki-ryu iaido is a visit to the grave of the founder. We of course went there when we were 1st dans. I was grateful for learning the art and wanted to express that. And that made a good impression on the folks we were training with. Just rambling, Dakin --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2007 06:49:15 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] No green belt Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net 'Karate' Suits Inflame Taekwondo Lovers Digital Chosunilbo The Chosun Ilbo A promotional brochure for a new Taekwondo park has sparked patriotic ire since the child models in the North Jeolla Province publication are wearing what appear to be karate suits. The first glimmer of controversy appears to be a posting on the website of the North Jeolla provincial government titled, "Brochure for the Taekwondo park, a shame." There, a devotee of the Korean martial art pointed out, "The models wear karate suits, their belts are tied improperly, and what is worse, there is no green belt in Taekwondo. This brochure is a waste of money. How could you administer the Taekwondo park without being able to distinguish the Taekwondo suit from the karate suit. Will you promote the spirit and culture of Korea in a brochure with kimono-clad models?" In the brochure, five foreign girls and boys are seen smiling, wearing white suits with belts in red, violet, green, orange and yellow. The suit does indeed look like those worn for the traditional martial art of Korea's arch-rival Japan: the top is a jacket rather than a pullover, and the neckline is just white, unlike that of the original Taekwondo suit, which is black or red or both. But the suit is in fact a new design adopted in hopes of improving the popularity of the sport. Still, the "improved" suit is so similar to a karate suit as to smack of capitulation. Now there are calls for proper standards for Taekwondo suits to be drawn up. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2007 07:52:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Luther Veuleman To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Jackson Bound Jye? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Jye, I started going to these Jackson deals in about 2001 I think. (which isn't that long ago compared to many of the 'vets' that post about it). We were a hard working group of guys from another system/school of thought, but just seemed to be missing something. One of my students, listmember Nathan, was on this digest, and heard everyone talking about it. He got me on the list, and after a short period of time, we decided to head over there, and haven't stopped going since. Its a really good group of people, very open armed/inviting in their approach. Hell, Ray Terrys going to be there man! All kidding aside, whatever reason you have for not being able to come, forget it and come anyway. You've got like a month and a half or so to get things squared away. Rooms are cheap, and first round is on me if you can make it. Hope to see you there. "The success of judging and refereeing at major taekwondo competitions is crucial in order for taekwondo to retain its status as an official Olympic sport," WTF President Choue said. He made the remarks for participants in the referee selection training camp, which kicked off on July 29 for a seven-day run. The camp drew a total of 187 referees from 57 countries. "The WTF has devoted much of its energy and time in working to ensure the fairest judgment and refereeing possible through stepped-up referee education programs," WTF President Choue said. "The WTF is also striving to introduce an electronic protector system." He continued to say, "We have seen much improvement in the WTF's operation and management of international referees at major WTF-promoted taekwondo events, including the 2007 Beijing WTF World Taekwondo Championships." Dr. Choue said, "To bring about fairer judgment and refereeing, the WTF adopted several measures at the 2007 World Taekwondo Championships. Among them were the introduction of the WTF-produced referee selection program and the evaluation of referees by coaches of national teams at the competition venue. Strong disciplinary action was also taken on the spot at a competition when undesirable incidents related to judging and refereeing took place." Despite such improvements, however, he said, we still have to work hard to further improve our refereeing and judging. "We should not allow a referee's 'intentional' or 'unintentional' mistake to change the color of an athlete's medal at the Olympic Games. We have to minimize referees' human error in judging and refereeing," he said. "As WTF referees, you have the responsibility to uphold the integrity of our sport through fair and transparent refereeing. This is a code that both you and myself should abide by in our mutual task of bringing the spirit of fair play to our sport," Dr. Choue said. "The martial art sport of taekwondo assigns great value to manners and discipline among practitioners." He said, "Fairer judging and refereeing will help bring a more orderly environment to the taekwondo competition sites, in which athletes and coaches will accept the competition results and follow proper protest procedures, if necessary." "For the For the sake of our athletes and for the sake of taekwondo's future, it is our responsibility to ensure that only the best athletes become worthy champions." "That is the reason why we have organized this training camp," Dr. Choue said. "Following this training, we will rank all participating referees and then send a certain number of highly ranked referees to the World Taekwondo Qualification Tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games scheduled for Sept. 28-30 this year in Manchester, United Kingdom, and the WTF's five continental Olympic qualification tournaments." The WTF is scheduled to finalize the 29 referees for the Beijing Olympic Games in February 2008. As part of our efforts to select the most qualified Olympic referees, WTF President said, we conducted basic medical checkups and fitness tests on all participating referees on July 31 for the first time ever in its referee program. "Once again, I would like to stress that the future of taekwondo largely depends on your fair judging and refereeing. A successful refereeing and judging at taekwondo competitions will help ensure that taekwondo is included among the IOC's 25 core sports for the Summer Olympic Games," he said. "In this regard, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games should be the most exemplary event for taekwondo ever in terms of refereeing and judgment," WTF President Choue said. "I wish each of you the very best result from this training camp and ask for your continued support for the further development of taekwondo and the WTF." --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2007 12:00:45 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Hapkido Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray: I also just got my tickets. At the door it is $85. Rick: Yesterday I received an email from one of the local Japanese art instructors who sent me a flyer for a St. Cloud, Minnesota event this Sunday. He asked me if I knew the fellow teaching the seminar, someone by the name of Rick Clark. I was also asked if you were a tenured full professor with a university. I did not know the answer to that. Although I told him the price was great and he should take his students and that you appeared to know you stuff except for some confused thinking that the name hapkido was a generic term. I also said that you should be forgiven for that mistake. :) Jere R.
