Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Martial Artists prepare for Korea Jeff Kempenaar Thursday August 09, 2007 West Lorne, Ontario, Canada Six of 20 Canadians travelling to South Korea for a HapKiDo competition are from this area. Learning the martial art at Security Training Solutions with Master Jim and Kate Kolar in West Lorne, the team was hand selected to compete in the world martial arts tournament happening March 2008. Currently, the team is raising money and training in West Lorne and London. Garret VanVugt of West Lorne is on the team and honoured to get the chance to go to South Korea. Since he only started learning martial arts last September, he never fathomed he would get the chance to compete on the world stage. "I didn't really have any hobbies so I thought I'd give it a go. I've really come a long ways," he said. Jim Kolar agrees. "I wouldn't have picked them to go if I didn't think they could do well," he said. Along with Jim, Kate and Garret, planning to travel to join Team Canada is Chris Huver, who has been studying Jujitsu with the Kolars for years, Will Depater and the Kolar's daughter Beth. A seventh local fighter could also make the trip but is on the mend from a leg injury. Kate will be competing in self defence and patterns, series' of movements, judged. Her daughter, Beth has won trophies before in competitions for patterns and will also compete in the event in Korea. Along with the competing, Team Canada and other national teams, will be treated as special guests in the communist country. "We'll get a tour of the palace. That's not something everyone who visits South Korea gets to do," said Kate. Also, an excursion to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea is on the agenda. The tournament organization is covering many cost but still, Team Canada has to fly itself over seas. Kate says locally, the team is trying to raise $20,000. "It's going to be a lot of work," she said. While many countries will also be performing demonstrations at the tournament, for what could be huge crowds, Team Canada hasn't decided yet, said Kate. She says choreography will have to be designed. "Because South Korea is a communist country and always in a Cold War, they are heavily regulated and can't use modern weapons in martial arts," said Kate. "Last year, Canadians went and demonstrated self defence with knives and the crowd was on its feet." The Kolars are extremely excited about the trip, not only for the tournament but for a chance to learn with the head of HapKiDo, Grand Master In Su Seo. "It's going to be amazing. I'm actually a little nervous," said Kate. The dojo in West Lorne is one of the only ones in Canada studying HapKiDo. The Kolars are in the process of setting up a national HapKiDo association commissioned with standards and rules. The HapKiDo Foundation is being started by the Kolars to bring the Black Art across the country.
