However, it's a poorly synchronized demo at best. Those techniques would get you killed in the street. Sadly it's pretty typical for TKD schools to teach this kind of "knife defense". Not trying to toot my horn but I have studied under Senior Guru Keith Moffett in Kun Tao Silat- "Uncles" System as well as many great Philippine Instructors in Knife and Stick. Knife/Stick fighting & Defense is nothing new to me, I have practiced it for many years. I wouldn't trust my life with any of these techniques shown in this clip...Would You? Once you get them in the dojang or dojo in your class, the truth comes out loud and clear. The big mouth may have one or two kicks and that is with out any follow up. Very easy to counter and defend against. What you wrote should be submitted to Black Belt Mag.>>> Well, just to be fair...I did not write the piece in question. It was written by Phil Elmore. That darn troublemaker Thomas Gordon stated that it was like something that I would write, so I think that's where the confusion is coming from. But, since Phil Elmore can't be here (he's probably knocking over a pizza buffet as we speak), I'll accept the compliment in his place. I hate to see these so called knife self defense routines that will get someone killed or cut up. I really hate to see the routine where someone has a knife, and the defender kicks it out of their hand, I sure hope no one does that in real life. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net How come she kept leaving the knife by the attacker? How often are we supposed to run to where the attacker is? Wouldn't that be something like impaling yourself? I know, I know, it wasn't a real situation. Nice acrobatics and great energy by the young lady though. This is how realistic knife attacks look like and how we train at my school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uymIi93hqmU --__--__-- Message: 15 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2007 19:18:54 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Subject: [The_Dojang] knife defense Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Here is one simple way to test your knife defense techniques... Use a training knife chalked with a bright colored chalk. Wear a white T-shirt or white uniform. The attacker puts K-Y Jelly on the back of their knife hand, wrist and forearm. The attackee puts K-Y Jelly on the palms and fingers of both hands. No laughing. :) Why? An attacker with evil intentions has a blade. Therefore blood will be present. Blood is very slippery. The attacker will try their very best to chalk up your pretty white T-shirt or uniform with their chalked training knife. Now practice your knife defense. You should be able to tell which ones will work and which ones are impractical in this somewhat realistic situation. Keep the ones that usually work, toss the ones that do not work. You'll be able to tell...
