This might happen and the defense shown might work, but ask yourself... if the attacker keeps the knife close, makes tight slashes, and pumps the knife in/out on a straight line attack (Angle 5 in some systems) instead of lunging forward and being off balance, is there anyway the defense will work. If you even momentarily have control of the knife hand, hit him, kick him. Joint locks don't work as well with non-compliant people. The guy with the knife who isn't trying to scare, but kill you... will not thrust until very close. Most SOB's are stabbing with one and grabbing with the other....and that tends to suck... I agree that the stuff in the video is useless, but I can't agree with that. I can tell you that when I am having the crap beaten out of me during any given West's Hapkido function, compliance is not a choice I make so much as it is an alternative to proving how well these techniques really do work against stubborn individuals. Granted, what happens when a technique is made to work looks very little like what you see in examples 1 through 5 in Hapkido for Dummies, but it does work. Bottom line, if what I do wasn't practical, I wouldn't be wasting my time.
