Firearm proficiency and DT are inextricably tied to each other. Having been personally responsible for certifying numerous LEOs in several police departments I can say that the LEOs behavior in policing or arrest situations are governed by state Statutes, municipal ordinances and codes, and departmental policies. It is for this reason, that martial arts and DTs are not the same. Because, behavior is governed by law. These restrictions by and large do not favor the LEOs behavior. And in many ways, safety. For example, the "carotid restraint" is forbidden in most municipalities but we in the FBI can use it. Regardless though, the "force continuum" is by and large the acceptable standard with respect to the escalation of force (and the use of deadly force). Budgetary constraints are the usual reason why most police departments do not have ongoing physical fitness requirements, DT programs, and firearm proficiency. The proof is in the pudding... My two cents worth... ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Dugy" To: Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 11:51:25 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] ARNIS Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Rick, It seems that Modern Arnis is the way to go...Am I correct that it's a weapons defense course? Arnis is a Filipino martial art(FMA), just like TKD and HKD are Korean martial arts. If you can't find a local Arnis school, also look for Eskrima/Escrima or Kali. See the Filipino side of http://www.martialartsresource.com/ for more info. Arnis and Eskrima are the terms most used for the FMAs in the Philippines, but Kali is also used for FMAs outside of the Philippines. I think some of the others on the list have answered the main questions. I am a HUGE proponent of cross training, because I truly do not believe that any one style or system has it all of the answers. So we need to add to our base style with knowledge from other systems. It's only in the modern era that martial artists have been so style specific. Way back when a martial artist would have been well rounded in armed and unarmed combat. So for me, I like to fill in the gaps I see and learn. That's the reason why the pop tart has strengthened security and signed up for Krav Maga, the hardcore Israeli combat techniques that Matt Damon uses in The Bourne Ultimatum. According to sources, after reading a few crazy fan mails, the 'Toxic' singer is terrified that someone is determined to harm her and her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James. "She has beefed up security, informed them of such mail. She is doing her best to make a comeback but she is terrified about the negative attention she is getting. And now she's fighting fit after signing up for Krav Maga training," Contactmusic quoted a source, as saying. "She realises she does not have the stamina she used to, after having two kids. She is tired, her body does not work the same. She is putting in overtime into working out strength training, and she's serious about martial art Krav Maga," the source added. The fighting technique, which has previously been studied by Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie for film roles like Enough and Tomb Raider, not only enhances agility and toughness, but also helps lift self-esteem and mental awareness. "It's definitely perfect for Britney Spears because she obviously has a lot of aggression in her and she needs to get that out. Krav Maga will enable her to do that with a degree of control," John Aldcroft, who teaches the martial art at London's British Academy of Krav Maga, said. "It will also help her with personal safety issues, especially when it comes to the paparazzi, who seem to crowd her at all times," he added. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Michael Munyon To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Krav Maga Celebrity Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 20:39:57 -0700 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net OMG...now that's just too funny.  I hope that someone catches her training in this.  Might make a good music video though.  :) Very Respecfully, Michael Munyon On Fri Aug 24 20:38 , 'Thomas Gordon' sent: Even Britney is wanting martial arts training.
